A bit of 3G advice

Hi all

We have just taken on a new yard with an outbuilding and we've been told by the previous tenant that BB was poor at less than 1mb. So rather that having the expense of a line and BB I thought about going down the 3g route

The site is only a few hundred yards from a 3 antenna so should get a good reception. I will be taking my existing dongle over there in the next few days to see what results I get.

My aim is to get the 3g set up so I can connect a PC, CCTV and also BT Versatility IP phone to it so that the we can make and receive calls to and from the main office a few miles away.

For the Versatility to work requires a fixed IP and we will need to port forward for the cctv.

I've found a website which does fixed ip sims for all the main providers (subject to a contract)

So, what hardware would you guys suggest.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure which dongle 3 are supplying at the moment, it used to be the E3276 I think, which is not compatible with any routers I know of. The closest was the TP Link MR3420 but I've had one and I wouldn't recommend it.

I'd suggest the Huawei B593 modem/router plus antenna (if 3G) or dual antennae (if 4G). Solwise have a good range of antenna products.

Will work with 4G if they roll it out in your area.

No need for a dongle - you put the SIM in the router. If one network "goes bad" this means you can try another just by changing the SIM.

"SOHO" specification as opposed to home user. (This might mean you can plug the VOIP phones into it directly - check the spec).

An alternative to "DIY" - based on the Bandrich products, including installation and optimisation:

No personal experience though if you do contact them would be interested in how you get on as I'm considering having them install a solution here to work with EE 4G.

Aside from being a place in London where you can find a chap called Peter Stringfellow (is he still alive?), it usually also means home and small office users or similar.

Don't suppose there's Line of Sight between the 2 locations (Unlikely I know)
