A new browser is here: Ladybird

Some good news, at last!

There's a new browser in town, it's not a mod of Chrome or Firefox and it's backed by a non-profit!

Very alpha at this stage, but it gives people a lot of hope. I've committed to donating monthly because a new browser outside of corporate interests is sorely needed.

I've been using Ecosia for the time being, has a lot of Chrome underneath it, but all profits go towards the climate emergency, and on top of that they're transparent of where things go. Even on each new tab page you can see the kWh power used, and money used from people's searches to areas. Actually pretty cool.

Don't get it, sorry, too old. What is the gist?
Basically, on their website which you linked above, they're using AI generated images to promote their product and there's been some drama I've spotted over pronouns with them using masculine pronouns instead of gender neutral ones and they don't seem bothered to change it (didn't want to initially bring it up again given I couldn't remember the full situation correctly but I saw it in the replies to the post I linked)

Agreed they could be issues, but at this point in time we need a new browser much more than we need them to be politically hypercorrect.

They are also using Discord which I despise, I forgave that too. :)

They seem to be quite pragmatic which I don't always like, but as I said, if that helps getting us out of the browser monoculture, then I don't care.

Again a nomenclature related observation, but an interesting choice of noun for the project, as Ladybird usually gets lost in translation between British and American English. 🐞 After all it's just not cricket to refer to Ladybugs is it, although the American English version might infer that there could be some bugs in this browser, which would never happen, would it?

So what is the unique selling point of this browser over Chromium?
It's not Chromium, no financial or corporate incentives to sell you or track you. Not a skin of either Chrome or Firefox, fully developed from scratch.

It's awesome to see a fresh, independent browser anything that breaks the browser monoculture is a win in my book.
