About:Blank???

Ok, Im praying someone can help, my laptops benn running fairly slow recently while online but im putting that down to kazaa running so thats not the problem, unless someone can sugest another reason it could be running slowly. The problem is that i cannot access hotmail. as soon as i log in to hotmail the web site gets redirected to a website called about:blank (this is also set as my homepage, which i cannot change). Can anyone explain what is doing this and how i stop/disable/delete this, i assumed it was spyware or something similar but have tried various spyware removal programs to no avail. any help would be great. Thanks JD

Hacking About:Blank is a trick sometimes used by the CoolWebSearch trojan (although I expect other malware will have copied this hack)

"Hijack This" may be of some help, but be careful what you remove. Most of what you see should be legitimate apps as this lists the insertion points often used by spyware.
(see his forum)

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

He also has an app (CWShredder) to remove some versions of CWS however he abandoned it partly due to the difficulty of removing current versions

Also see http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/

Ok, tried this link (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html) but it comes up page cannot be displayed. Downloaded the 3 suggested spyware removal progams for this website http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ and run all 3, ad-aware finds CoolWebSearch (3types) which i remove, i then run it again only to find the exact same 3 things again, also my web page is still set to about:blank and hotmail is still being re-directed to this site aswell, this is doing my head in, can anyone please help. Also downloaded WinPatrol which eeps alerting me that ''a new Internet Explorer Add-On has been installed on your system'' This add on is called bed.dll, does anyone know what this is? i keep denying it, should i? also about:blank is constantly trying to re-hijack my homepage which WinPatrol also alerts me about, please help, i'm getting desperate. Thanx JD

The way I removed this was to start with favourites and remove every link in favourites that is theirs, then into the cookies and click each one any that mention them delete once cookies are cleared select do not allow cookies from this website. Then click search and look for anything that is associated with them delete all.

Be warned it will take a while doing it this way but if all are cleared it is gone.

sorry if i sound a bit/lot thick, but i'm at wits end, i've cleared all my favourites, and i've deleted all cookies, but how do i not allow cookies from this website? and how do i search for anything that is associated with them? and how do i delete this? thanx 4 ur help so far JD

to do a search start>search>files or folders.
when the window opens type in the keyword for the files you are looking for. in my case it was websearch2. you type the name that is on all things you have deleted. when the search is over delete all that match the name.

CWS can be an absolute pain to remove. It has many variants and sometimes spawns new versions on a daily basis!
The About:Blank version employs two malicious dll's. One is visible and can be easily deleted whilst the other is hidden. The hidden dll regenerates the viewable dll if it is deleted or changed.
One way around this is to use a program such as Resplendant Registrar to track down the "appinit dll" or a combination of CWShredder and HijackThis! will aid in it's removal.
If you still have problems, post back here.
