Seems like they are taking the squeeze to another notch. Pay extra or get ads.

The service was a bit underwhelming and couldn't use it many times because of lack of (English!) subtitles, but now it's going to be unwatchable for us with the introduction of ads.

I wish Amazon had a cheaper deliveries-only subscription as I'm not really interested in any of their other services at this point.

You can always pay £4.99 per delivery, so unless you're averaging 2 or more per month then it'll be cheaper not to have Prime. Or you can gather things together that you don't need urgently until you have £25 of them.

If you're not a Prime member, it also means you can also consider buying things from other online sellers, which is like a breath of fresh air.

Alas we buy a lot more than 2 items per month.
I've come to hate the position we've put ourselves in, but it's going to be hard to go back.

I used to buy stuff on eBay but the Royal Mail, Yodel, Evri, etc. are now a complete joke. Except for bird seed and other heavy items that arrive by special courier, eBay is my last choice. And visiting stores, except for food, is a waste of time given the poor choices, prices and traffic these days. Amazon's logistics make it and its customers a winner.

All the streaming services are the same. The only way is to pay monthly and schedule each for a single month and binge any content during that month i.e Jan = ITV X, Feb = Disney, Mar = Netflix etc.

Only drawback is not sharing what's trending

Hoping Amazon makes this easily bypassable (just like ads on the TV apps for ITVX and My5)

It's unsustainable to offer so much for £9/month tbh, other services you get way less for the money
You say Amazon offer so much for £9.00 a month, but they don't actually offer that much, or much decent, without having to 'pay per view'.

As for the cost of deliveries that Amazon pay itself these are exactly the same costs whether its delivered next day or a couple of days using their free delivery for over £20. All they do is hold the stock on the free delivery option for a day or two before despatch so it doesn't get to you next day.

Technically we are currently paying nothing for Prime lol for the next 4 months or so

For £9 a month on Amazon, you get: exclusive items in certain games, free next day delivery, stream a wide range of movies, stream your music ad-free, Twitch Prime iirc, streaming Fortnite only I believe on Luna

Yes but many things you might like to watch are not included in the Prime subscription, they are advertised in the Prime App, but you have to pay extra to watch it on top of the £9 a month.

It depends how much you order from Amazon.. if you order more than a few items per month it may be worth it even if you make zero use of Prime Video or Amazon Music. Throw in the odd film or series you end up liking on Prime Video and it becomes even better value.

Amazon US only

Nothing from Amazon UK on my Prime account

PS: Where does this 9GBP per month come from? it's 7.92/month where I'm sitting...

Edit: Ah Ok, there's a pay monthly plan at 8.99GBP... Why would you take that?

UK as well, not only US.

I don't mind at all some adverts before watching something. I often hear about things I never heard of this way.

I absolutely despise it when what you are watching stops and starts unskippable adverts for 2mins.

If they are doing the latter all this will do is promote more piracy. People really hate those types of ads.

Apologies, you were correct !

In an email to Prime Video members, Amazon said the move would allow the company to “continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing investment over a long period of time”.

Not received that email at casa 'Leg yet .. :(

Realistically, most video and music streaming services are relatively underpriced compared to the cost of the service. Doesn't surprise me that Amazon are doing this, they've already conditioned the userbase to expect ads by showing a preview of their own shows before every episode of TV

I'm not so sure about that.

How much money does Amazon make a year? In 2022, Amazon earned $514 billion dollars in revenue. Of that, $225 billion was net profit, a 14.01% increase from the previous year. So far this year, Amazon has made $404.4 billion in revenue; $127.4 billion in Q1, $134 billion in Q2, and $143.1 billion (+13%) in Q3.

Pretty sure that's almost all from AWS and amazon.com, I doubt Prime Video specifically is even close to being profitable. Part of it is, as said, money wasted on crap like the new lotr but generally it's not by any means a cash cow. Just look at competitors that only have one revenue flow, netflix's profit margin is set to drop to below 10% in coming years and has had to radically restructure, in music streaming spotify has only just managed their first profitable quarter.
