I don't mind at all some adverts before watching something. I often hear about things I never heard of this way.
On a related note, it makes me laugh when one of the criticisms from the anti-BBC mob is that the BBC has adverts anyway - for its own programmes.

Yeah, bloody BBC.. making me aware of programmes they've made with my licence fee that I might enjoy watching.. who the hell do they think they are! *shakes fist* /s

Pretty sure that's almost all from AWS and amazon.com, I doubt Prime Video specifically is even close to being profitable. Part of it is, as said, money wasted on crap like the new lotr but generally it's not by any means a cash cow. Just look at competitors that only have one revenue flow, netflix's profit margin is set to drop to below 10% in coming years and has had to radically restructure, in music streaming spotify has only just managed their first profitable quarter.
It is but since it reports as a whole there is no way knowing. But I'm pretty sure poor Amazon isn't taking no harm.

I'm not so sure about that.

How much money does Amazon make a year? In 2022, Amazon earned $514 billion dollars in revenue. Of that, $225 billion was net profit, a 14.01% increase from the previous year.
Where did you get those figures from?? 50% profit on sales in retail is impossible.

I found the Amazon annual report for 2022. Net sales do indeed total $514bn (page 23).

But the net operating income was $12.2bn (page 24), down from $24.9bn in 2021. There was actually an operating loss of $2.8bn on North American sales, and a loss of $7.7bn on International sales, but these were offset by a profit of $22.8bn on AWS.

EDIT: Perhaps your figures came from ChatGPT, which is infamous for simply making things up.

It's not just retail - AWS makes up a massive portion of their profits. Your underlying point still stands however 👍

Was as a whole I presume . not just north america

My question still stands. You claimed that Amazon made "$225 billion net profit" in 2022. Where did you get that figure from - which differs so widely from Amazon's published accounts?
It's mentioned in various places, but it seems to be gross profit, not net one, not sure if this changes the discussion.

Amazon isn't doing so bad in a whole. Prime Video is a very very small part of Amazon. I've had Prime for 3 years now . Prime Video doesn't even have that much to offer when it comes to streaming. I use Prime for shipping basically . But my opinion is still the same. That is that Amazon is not suffering . Amazon will live on with or without Prime video/music any way.

gross profit and net profit are very different things, as that link makes pretty clear

Regardless . Amazon isn't taking no harm and Prime video is only a very small fraction of Amazon. I have every streaming service you can use in the UK without using a VPN and Amazon Video is one of the worst for content along with Paramount plus. If having ads starts letting them have better content in the future I may change my opinion on whether it's service is worth a extra £3 to skip ads. But as is it's not in my opinion.

A loss of 2.722 Billion in 2022 vs a 75 Billion gain from years ,2020,2021 and 2023 is hardly going under or something . 72 Billion net income for 4 years is damn good .

apple and google made $90b and $60bn in net profit last year respectively, amazon is not a very profitable company compared to the rest of FAAMG. it only outperformed meta, which has only just recovered to its pandemic share price after restructuring massively
