ADSL 2 Wireless Router Recommendation For Range Challanged House

Hi All,

I have had a couple of wireless routers a Netgear MiMO Super G one and Zyxel Homeplug one.

I have had rubbish wireless connections using both with only the "next room" picking up a signal any further and nada. Also the Zyxel one has regular line drop outs.

I am currently using a homeplug solution, but get connection problems on different ring circuits with that too! I have undefloor heating with plenty of insulation between floors and all the walls are solid brick.

I am looking at the new "wireless N" ADSL routers and am wondering what to get. from reading reviews it seems that something like the D-Link DSL 2740R has very good performance and wireless range, but I wondered if I should spend a bit more and go for a SOHO router instead like the Draytek Vigor 2820? Do soho routers generally have better range then domestic routers?

I will still be using a "G" internet radio device and need good range in this mode as well.

Thanks for any advice

Chris

N spec wireless routers should offer improved coverage (especially if both the router and your Wi-Fi adapters are from the same manufacturer and support the same modern 802.11n); though in reality you won't notice a massive difference.

Thick solid brick walls eat wireless signals for breakfast and I had similar problems in my previous home. Indeed I tried several different routers, such as the Linksys WAG300N, Netgear DG834N, Sagem ???? and others that I cannot recall. Coverage did improve but not by much, nothing you could really write home about.

Fitting a better Ariel didn't help much either as the signal still needed to go through the same walls and bypass around a lot of doors. There is no golden solution to this but others may have some better recommendations. Oddly enough, and against all logic, enabling WPA or WPA2 encryption on 'N' spec routers actually made the weaker Wi-Fi connections more stable.. go figure (before it was open and without encryption - no neighbours).
