ADSL Drop-off problem

I have been a little bit of a problem with my ADSL dropping off for no apparent reason.

I have been in touch with my ISP and they have done some tests and have come back and said that it is my fault

This is a copy of what they said

----------------------
Major Findings DSL Fault identified. Bearer fault (HR joint)/RF2, possible
CPE or Line card.
63.5dB Long Line: please be aware that a >60db result does not necessarily
indicate a Line Fault

In light of these test results we would ask you to throughly, check all your
cables, filters & connections on your equipment at your end.

This kind of thing happened when the micro filter develops a fault. Please
purchase a new microfilter and retest the service.

-------------------------
Now my system worked well untill the bad weather around the 27th/28th of last month but now we get some drop offs. The drop-off can last anywhere between 5 mins and several hours..

The kit I have now was all working fine then. But as requested I went to Comet to get a couple of new microfilters.
While speaking to the salesman I said that I have only had my old ones a few months at most...And did they often die like this.
His responce was that he had never actually ever known a filter to die ever.

I have also tried unplugging my phones and using the ADSL....But that seems to make no difference

If it makes any difference I am using Win98SE with a D-Link DSL-504T router that acts as a hub for my 2 machine home network. The network doesn't go down so I don't think that is the problem and the cables are safely tucked away so that they cannot be knocked

I'm not trying to point fingers at my ISP yet...I would just like a little friendly help that may help me find the source of my problem.

Thanks
Rick

I wouldnt have put it down to a customer problem if woosh showed me that, i would ask for you to check with a different filter and factory reset your router apart from that its a BT fault and probable that one of the batteries on the line has died or has a bad contact.

I have a 512 connection....No slowdowns to speak of....
Its either on or off! B-)

I have changed the filters (2 of them) but I had a drop off again this evening

The router hasn't been changed at all other than putting in the connection details. The network has no special firewall rules or anything.
But I clicked the 'reset' button anyway B-)

I'll see how it goes

Thanks for the help.

The same thing happened to me last month with Pipex, but by a strange coincidence it cleared up almost immediatley when I phoned BT to ask if they were pi$$ing about at the exchange.
Tell BT you are having the problem and get them to up the line gain, this may help.

I had a BT Micro Filter die on me, it was only weeks old.

You say it happened after bad weather, your equipment or your BT line may have suffered a voltage spike if you had a storm, you do have your kit protected by a good quality Surge Protector don't you ????

Surge protector?....Erm......I'm guessing not...
My 4 gang power extension has an ECD on it.....But I don't think the phone socket does. I'm not very up on technology I'm afraid!

My ISP is Broadsurf......But I don't think they are to blame, they handled it and passed it onto BT (Or whoever it was) and came back to me with that.

UPDATED
I just tried to speak to someone at BT but they were unable to help me. They could really only help me if I was a BT customer....I said I was a VISP customer and they said that everything would have to go through them.

It looks like they did'nt actually pass it to BT, those results are from a Whoosh test that is used to test the broadband circuit..

63db is high, but on 512k circuit should be ok for most.. but some people would have problems with this..

I would be enclined to go back to your ISP and request a fault be raised with BT.. especially as you have changed nothing your end and the service became intermitant since bad weather..

Thanks

Andy

But the bad weather could have caused damage to the EU's equipment which would result in the fault being passed back and forth between BT and the ISP with no progress. To me it makes perfect sense that you make sure your side is fine before it gets put to BT for a fault.

Totally agree,,

Filters easy enough to check. modem on the other hand most people dont have a spare.. but could borrow one?

Not sure about his ISP if they would send him one to test with tho?

Trikky, are you on the master socket? if not are you using an extention cable? it may be worth doing a full test on the main socket..

Most master sockets are in two seperate pieces. the lower section if screws removed will come away from the wall.. behind that their should be another socket.. test from that.. if its fine from their then the issue is with the internal wirring..

I would give BT a call again and this time dont even mention ADSL just ask them to do a standard line check on your telephone line, as this is what you want checking not your adsl. I`ve also been in situations where after I have done this everthing starts working!

I spoke to BT and when I wanted to do a check they said they couldn't BUT.....As the voice bit was registering fine (Her actual words) there is no problems.

I don't have a spare modem unfortunatly, this was one thing I brought up with the guy at Broadsurf....I am going to try to get hold of something but it may take a few days (As I don't know anyone I can just nip over and borrow for a while!)
The only suggestion is that me and a friend swap routers for a couple of days and see if his falls over

I am on the master socket and I will try the panel bit.....I'm guessing I won't get into trouble with BT for doing this?

The only problem I have with this is the fall offs cannot be scheduled!
I can go for a couple of days with it all being fine but then it will fall over.
The next question is....How long do I leave it before its 'Fixed'?

Please forgive any stupid questions.....
Oh well its all a learning curve....And I am learning so much! B-)

.

:smilet: OK...The 4 gang extension that you have will not protect your phone line, and probably not your other plugged in devices.

I have a Belkin 8 gang unit which also allows phone line in/out. So 8 plugged items are protected.....and also the phone line connected to modem/ router etc.

I recall a few years back having a terrific storm here....it blew my neighbours portable phone across the room and destroyed my Fax Macine.

Now I am not saying that is the cause of your problems, it is just one possibility.

Hope you soon get it sorted.

Good luck.

No this is fine, BT actually request this when trying to establish the location of a fault.. and its the same test that a BT BB Enginere will do first when called to a customers property

UPDATE

Ok...Its now 7pm on sunday..

My last drop off was midafternoon of Thurday...Not long after speaking to the BT lady actually....
That drop off was only a couple of minutes though

All fine since then.....

I'm hoping that this may well be the end of it!

But I'll give it a couple of days more before I consider it 'Fixed'

I would just like to thank everyone that helped me here.
Its nice to know that there are people about that are willing to help us poor unfortunates!

She might have run a test on your line when it dropped just after you spoke to her as some ppl at BT do have access to the testing systems, it would have been more out of curiousity on her part i should think though.

Just reading this thread and having the exact same problems as Trikky, I am certain that cutoffs are down to weather conditions.

I have been through the same rigmarole and my isp asked me to run the bt test line and monitor the cutoffs.

When it was pointed out to BT that it was a fault at their end it was sorted immediately until the next heavy rain storm and I was back to square one again.

It has been heavy rain in my area for the last 2 days and I am having cutoffs at 5min intervals but sometimes I can get at least half an hour before the next one.

I just wish BT could solve this problem once and for all as it can be so frustrating when you do every conceivable test to your equipment only to find out it's at their end.

Hmmm......
As I type this we are having bad rain.....And I mean bad rain....
It looks like the ocean is trying to take the land back by air drop.

And i just noticed I had a drop off....It can't have been a very long one as I am surfing and doing my mail....So I would guess that it was only for a few seconds....A minute at the most...And I only noticed it because I saw the lights flashing on my router....

Very strange.....But other than that one drop off my line has been good since I made the note to BT
