ADSL Dropping connection

ZoomADSL X6 router is continually dropping connection after ~20mins almost exactly since yesterday evening.. there was a bit of storm with some lightning and then for the rest of the night and today its been clear weather. And the router was connected during that time(during the storm) altough afterwards was having problems. So I'm just wondering if my router has developed a fault or if the microfilter might be the problem?

bare in mind that my neighbour had some connecting issues to the internet a few days ago and I replaced his microfilter with a spare I had and that got him back onto the internet again. Only for me I can get on the internet just it doesn't stay on for long.

Also when i lose connection after 20mins I can't actually connect to my router with the web interface, actually I can't connect to any other networked PC. so its like my router is dying until I turn it off/on again then it will work for another 20mins from connecting...

Also that SNR margin Upstream value ok? it goes like than when I download, but if I upload the Downstream value is fixed at 17...

Any advice? I've decided to buy a new microfilter today I'm hoping that is the problem but if not.. probably my router yeh?

The upstream SNR is impossible unless it has just synced up, it does look like it could be a filter or the router, your best trying your equipment on your neighbours line and get the same readings from the router to see if the SNR margin is still so high.

ok so I tried leaving the router on without connecting it to the phone line and it stayed working for over an hour..then I connected it to the phone line and it got online.. and lasted for just over 20mins before locking up.. I say locking up because I can't get to the web interfacing but the lights still work :S..

so microfilter or router.. which is the trouble causer here?

well could try the cheapest optioin first the microfilter then if it doesn't solve it try to borrow a router from a friend for 30mins since yours only lasts 20mins before locking up.

I had an old router that often wouldn't respond while it was trying to reconnect - I think negotiating a connection must have used 100% of its relatively feeble CPU's processing power so it couldn't do anything else. So when the router locks up try unplugging the phone line and waiting a couple of minutes to see if you can then access it - if you can the log might give a clue to the cause.

One thing I notice is that it is using t1.413 rather than the G.DMT, Could try setting the mode to G.DMT rather than Auto, although I doubt it would make any odds.

If you don't have a spare filter then, if you've got an old dial-up modem lead (of reasonable quality) or suitable adaptor you could test the router without a filter. The router itself doesn't need a filter, but leave the phones, sky boxes etc that were connected through it disconnected as they do.

Try the router on another line if you can, also try hard (factory) resetting it.

If you've got a suitable spare power supply (be sure to check the polarity as well as voltage and current rating) you could try that.

sweet i didn't realize that was possible.. must have got a few of those spare actually.. will try it now

well that didn't make a difference and the new microfilter i got this morning made no difference either, it still drops connection ~20mins.

ISP emailed saying "This looks to be a through-put issue at the exchange side." So I'm guessing this is something for BT to sort out right? More than likely I suppose. just I hate having to deal with them lot :(

Have you checked for noise on your line?

Simply dial 17070 and select "Quiet Line Test" then listen for any noise.... try it on your line extentions then at the BT line box where comes into your property. If there is no noise on the line and voice works fine with no crackling then its your ISP that will have to raise this with BT. You will need to keep doing BT speed tests about 3 a day at different times of the day to help them find the problem.

So it turns its something to do with argon 4 chipsets having these issues with dropping the connection.. my router (Zoom adsl x6 5590) is one of them that uses that chipset I believe. So now to find a router that doesn't use that chipset, as i don't see this issue getting fixed anytime soon.

Well, I'm only guessing, based on it only affecting routers that use the same chipset, an ISP issue is more likely to affect everybody. However as I can't find any posts from users of other ISPs with the same disconnection issue, it is looking like I may well be wrong. :o
