This mainly applies to gaming, and finding out people who live 10 minutes away from me on average have 10-50ms lower ping than me whilst gaming.

I'm currently with BT Broadband whilst my pal is with Talk Talk, the latter use BT Broadband lines. My pal seems to have utter crap download rates but brilliant pings, I have brilliant download rates but crap pings, I can't win?

So UK Users, can you recommend good ADSL1 services (I can't get ADSL2+) with low latency and good download rates? Preferably one that doesn't think it needs to go north to Edinburgh before it goes south to London, or one that hops through a bunch of unknown IP's for no reason.

Fixed link.

On a somewhat unrelated note, is it best to disable interleaving for gaming?

Yes it is.

Interleaving is a form of error correction.

Turning it off can lower your pings, but it can also cause stability problems, particularly on longer lines.

Multiplayer performance is usually all about the quality of your upstream connection more than your downstream (download) one. BT is one of the lower peforming ISPs for upstream quality, alongside AOL and Tiscali. If you can get O2's (Be Broadband) unbundled service in your area (not their BT based Access product) then they might be worth a bet or you could always switch to TalkTalk like your friend, but we don't often see them gaining praise for multiplayer quality :) .

Also TT's non-unbundled BT based connections are usually much more expensive then the public price on their website, are you sure your friend is on their BT line and not the unbundled one? Sky's Broadband packages might be another option, though I'm not sure about upload and latency performance on them yet.

For the best multiplayer quality you really have to spend more and look towards the likes of Fast.co.uk, Zen, IDNet and AAISP.

Actually TalkTalk aren't quite as bad as you might expect, here are some results:

Not outstanding, but it is TalkTalk we're talking about... :p

I'm on TalkTalk's ADSL2+ service with fastpath, my upload speed is around 0.80MB.

Well, Be/o2 etc aren't available here. Using the checker (I can't find the darn link on this site now, if someone can help me with that) I found UKOnline to be available in my area, after a quick chat, they also have LLU available for me. With a 19.99 8mbit service and a promise of a lower contention http://www.ukonline.net/compare/ I'm thinking about switching to them.

Whilst talking to a very nice chap on the phone, he stated that it should "in theory" be lower due to using LLU, the lower contention (BT is 50:1), and the fact they don't use any form of traffic shaping. Anyone disagree?

Oh, here's a pic from the router showing errors after a connection of 12 hours. *Assuming* I switch to UKOnline, still recommend interleave off? Actually, I'm not sure, UKO might have it off by default.

Since Sky own UKOnline, the service is basically the same as Sky's "Max" service, which is supposedly unlimited.

They both use the same Easynet LLU network.

Thanks, I phoned them up and they said I would definitely have LLU. It's looking like the best for my area, just nervous of getting stuck in a 12 months contract. Still recommend interleave off?

Just wanted to post my new UKOnline (Sky/Easynet) tracert.

Loving my new pings of 5-30 on servers instead of 60-100! Thanks everyone.
