ADSL2+/ADSL2 - No Increase in Speed

Now that are you online LeeH, could you confirm if Zen can request thr target SNRM to be fixed?

I dont know off the top of my head as I dont deal with the DSL side of things as much as I used to but I will certainly find out.

Yes, we are able to set a target SNR now via BT. It came into action a few months back.

I have to disagree with AAISP reply though. Yes the 10 day rule applies (offically), however, calling BT you can get it manually adjusted if as an ISP we mess up ;)

I thought I had seen something about it but wanted to speak to who does the DSL stuff now before I gave a definitive answer

Well id love to know how that works as the line management will actually dictate what the SNR actually ends up being set at.

You or BT may be able to force a line to say 3db, chances of it staying at 3db though (especially on a poor line) are slim to none.

But, can you also get it fixed so DLM will never change it? That is what I would really like.

The way i understand it (unless the BT DLM system can now be disabled on individual lines) NO they can not fix it. They can give it a "target" to aim for, if the line (or rather the DLM) though doesnt think its reliable at that target it will just increase it anyway.

Setting say 3db target on your line its highly unlikely it would be reliable and the DLM system would just gradually increase it until it were.

At least thats how i understand it.

Aquiss, any response to the above question?

The DLM can't be told to set the SNR to a specfic figure as line still need to be able to adapt to daily conditions. What BT have introduced is a means to engage with the SNR much more easily that previously has been with their systems.

However, if your line has issues, then the underlining cause of this should be resolved first.

Is there also a limit on how many times in a month you can force a line to reset its SNR? (Im sure i read that somewhere)

I dunno why BT just dont give ISPs the function in their control panel like tools to just disable DLM on a per line basis. Would make some consumers life and ISPs life so much easier in some circumstances.

I still don't have any speed increase :(. Is it normal to get no increase? Stats:

Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 00:29:06
Downstream: 7.69 Mbps
Upstream: 1.09 Mbps

ADSL Settings
VPI/VCI: 0/38
Type: PPPoA
Modulation: G.992.5 Annex A
Latency type: Interleaved
Noise margin (Down/Up): 6.1 dB / 5.9 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): 39.2 dB / 21.8 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 20.3 dBm / 12.7 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up): 4998 / 93
CRC Events (Down/Up): 4 / 32
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
HEC Events (Down/Up): 6 / 10
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 4 / 0

As a general rule, if your line speed was 6Mbps* or less with ADSL1 then the downstream won't increase with ADSL2+ (though the upstream will go up a little)

* I've seen this quoted variously as 4Mbps and as 6Mbps

For example if you lived in the housing estate in Bentley where the doctors surgery is and you got the full 8Mbps down on ADSL1 then you might get something like 16Mbps with ADSL2+. Only the lines which go fastest already see any significant improvement.

The upgrade is probably more about getting rid of ancient legacy kit at the exchange then it is about improving speeds.

Hey -- You have 4 errored seconds on the downstream and HEC errors on both d/s and u/s. Errors seconds and HEC errors will prevent the DLM managing and reprofiling your line. You may have a 'StickyBRAS' issue...

I assume that you have checked with your ISP that you subscribe to a package for a connection rate in excess of 6Mbps...

When you power down your CPE, and reboot after a minute or so, does your synchronisation speed remain static or does it fluctuate?

Are you currently connected at the test socket and has your router been powered up here for a minimum of 48hours-with minimal resistance on the line(ie removed all other equipment additional handsets, extension bell wire, fax, skyTV etc)?

When seeing and dealing with incidents bearing similar traits, the root cause is generally, Intermitent Sync, LTB issue, PSTNfailure and REIN or SHINE interferrence.

If none of the above have been identified when you have contacted your ISP, and the line has an ADSL2+ capability greater than the current rate then I would request an SNR reset to remove any Sync Cap imposed on the line by the DLM.
