Adsl2

I am about to switch to another ISP. I have been considering O2 but when I go to their web site I check the speed and it shows Zero. I tried other ISPs and all, except Plusnet which also showed Zero, gave a speed of 3.5. So I contacted O2 and one reply was that there was maintenance work by BT causing the error. I telephoned them and the reply this time was that they use ADSL2 and my speed would be 15 times slower than ADSL. Plusnet also told me that there was a problem with BT!!
Has anybody any real answer to my problem? Is it an error or because of ADSL2.
Regards
Dave

LOL "the reply this time was that they use ADSL2 and my speed would be 15 times slower than ADSL", that is complete and utter nonsense, even by BT's standard :) . Firstly, for details in regards to 'up to' 8Mbps ADSL vs 'up to' 24Mbps ADSL2+, see this page as it offers more information:

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/broadband_DSL.php

Most people will get a slight or big speed boost from using ADSL2+, although some may experience a very minor drop due to how it is implemented, so what you've been told is obviously ridiculous.

We can tell you what your telephone line is likely to do if you paste your router stats (also mentioned at the above link). In addition please put your phone number into this form (without spaces and leave the postcode blank) and allow the report to load (might take 30 seconds):

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/checker/

The estimated speed results for ADSLMAX will help us know what your line can do.

Very many thanks for the reply. However I went to the link and this is the result

"YES - ADSL2+ @ up to 24Mbps (BT Wholesale Broadband Connect / 21CN)
Estimated Best Speed (Kbps):
(Estimated speed only shows for supporting exchanges or those with an activation date)"

You will note that there is no figure along the side of 'Estimated Best Speed '

I get the same on mine, post your routers line stats and i will be able to give you a ball park figure of what to expect.

ADSL2+ is a failed product many are not seeing improvements in speed but loss from ADSLmax. It seems the router has a lot at fault and BT's failure to use one MSLAM in all exchanges a router that gives good speed at one can give atrocious speed at another exchange.

I have dropped from steady 5500kbps IP profile to around 4000kbps tried three routers so far depending on router syn can be anything from 1000kbps to 6440kbps ust not steady.

Good luck in your attempts I should see 10000kbps but BT's new copper line fitted less than 2 yrs ago aged fast, today they say 4000kbps is max my line can give on ADSL2+ now with an ATT of 38.5 down.

Many thanks folks.
I would not know how to get the router stats even if I had one!! The story is that at the moment I am with Orange  and will soon be moving to a new house and will then get a new router. So in anticipation I have been shopping around to find a good ISP without having to break the bank!
O2 seemed OK because I have a mobile contract with them and the 8 meg fitted my usage I think. The other option was Plusnet which I thought was also suitable.
If I select ISP's that have ADSL then the line speed is 3.5 meg so is there any point in spending a fortune when the line speed is that low? Mind you, at the moment with Orange it is only 1.5. so most ISPs will be an improvement!
My dilemma lingers on so if you have any suggestions they would be very welcome.
Many thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

Yeah I wanted the ADSL MAX results and not the ADSL2+, they're just above the ADSL2 ones on the report. At present it is difficult to get an estimated speed from the checker database.

Generally if your ADSL/ADSLMAX line speed is estimated to be 3.5Mbps then I wouldn't worry about advertised speed, any 8Mbps to 24Mbps promoted BT/LLU ADSL service will not make a huge difference.

If you can get O2's unbundled (LLU) broadband packages then they're worth a try, likewise for Sky's Broadband Unlimited option (if you have a Sky TV sub). They also have a more expensive BT based 'O2 Home Access' package but its performance is not as good and we have seen a few complaints about that side of their network.

Make sure to avoid the big boys though, like Orange (well you know that lol), AOL and Tiscali.. those will only cause you hurt. I don't yet know if Virgins new ADSL service is any good but there are delays getting connected. TalkTalk is a bit hit and miss, same with BT.

Very many thanks. I wrote to O2 and asked them to clarify the different answers and this is the reply:
"Hello Mr. D Smith

On behalf of O2, I apologise for the misleading information that you have been given, however I will clear this up for you now.

Firstly, If you have just moved into a property and have activated a BT landline it can take time for BT to carry out the neccesary test to indicate exactly how far your line travels from the BT exchange under the ground to the point in your home. If the line has been active for a some months or years then it would indicate that BT have not updated the DATA base that we need to access for the result of this test.

O2's Broadband system works with the DATA base at BT Wholesale to recieve such information on your line and this information is necessary for O2 to give an estimated speed test because the download speed depends on how far the line travels from the exchange to your home.

If the test has not been carried out or if the DATA base has not been updated then we cannot provide you with information of download speed.

Second, O2's broadband technology is called ADSL2+ this technology provides a top download speed of 24Mbps dependant on how far you live from your local exchange as explained above.

BT use ADSL Top speed 2Mbps or ADSL MAX top speed of 8Mbps. So in answer to your question O2 should be able to provide you with a much faster service than BT however,

If you line travels more than 5500km from the BT Exchange to the point in your home then our ADSL2+ broadband signal will drop off and become unstable the reason behind this is our frequency that is transmitted down the line is higher this is why the speed is faster, the frequency BT transmit down the line is lower this speed equals slower however the signal can travel over a longer distance.

Last, O2 offer a 30 days Happiness Grantees and this give you the opportunity to try our broadband and if you are unhappy with the service for any reason you may cancel without penalty. so give it a try and we will do tests on your line once it becomes active this will give you a very accurate download speed. the outcome of the test will be withing the 30 days guarantee.

Hope this helps though if you feel that you need more clarification on the subject above you can call 0800 230 02 02."

Unless you know otherwise I may as well give it a try.

Thank yolu
Dave
