advice about switching ISP

Hi

I have been with Orange for the last 14 months and thankfully I am nearing the end of my contract. I have recently moved to the country in Scotland and my local exchange is about 2 miles away. According to samknows I can get BT Wholesale ADSL & BT Wholesale ADSL MAX and my line can support upto 8.5mb. I do receive these speeds sometimes with Orange but during weekends and evenings it can drop to around 0.2mb. Because I have recently moved I dont know if this drop in speed is due to Orange or the change in address.

Can anyone tell me if my service is likely to significantly improve during peak times if I switch to another ISP and if so which one would be best? I was thinking about joining lovefilm and would like the option to be able to download and stream films via my PS3.

Thanks

If you can only get BT wholesale services on your exchange (not 21CN), you'd be limited up to 8Mb instead of 8.5Mb.

What speed does samknows state that your line should be capable of?

Matt

Hi

Samknows does say 8mb but sometimes when I do a manually internet speed check it comes back as 8.5mb. Would BT be the best option or would there still be significant slowdown at peak tmies?

I think your speedcheck will be wrong, as 8.5Mb isn't technically possible on an up to 8Mb MAX connection.

BT do use traffic management, and as with any network that does, there may be more slower periods than an ISP that does not.

Matt

So ISP's that dont use traffic management would be faster at peak times? And if so what would be a good option?

Quite possibly yes but expect to pay more for a connection that isn't traffic managed.

ISP Review have their own comments on a mix between cheap/cheerful and quality here.

Gadgie,

Every phone line is different due to its location (exchange VP / ISP capacity etc.), length and the quality of your home wiring.. among other things. I think the first thing to establish here is what your line can really cope with. Do you have access to your router? If so go to the browser, login to it and have a hunt around for the connection details / status. We need to know the results for your line 'Attenuation' and 'Noise Margin' (you usually get values for both upstream and downstream), as well as anything else that's easy to paste from the same section.

Also you say you've recently moved. Have you seen the 8Mbps like speeds in your new location or only at the old one?

PS - Please stick a quick review in for Orange here :)
