Advice appreciated

Hi guys. I'm in a bit of a dilemma and I hope you can help me out.
I've tried to get this info from other topics, but I guess it's a bit specific so I decided to create a new topic.

I currently use Pipex ADSL with an (approx.) 4MB unlimited connection. A lot of companies like to boast 8MB these days, but the distance I am from the exchange I float around 3.5MB. I pay around £24 a month for this package. Now, I've never really had a problem with Pipex's reliability. It's probably the one reason I've stuck with them. Their customer service is pretty lame, and I'm pretty sure they're throttling my P2P traffic - but they're pretty reliable so I've stuck by them.

I think it's time to move now though...

Sky offer free broadband to their subscribers. Free internet is a big carrot, I bet it's rubbish. Plenty of downtime and plenty of speed throttle. So I'm very hesitant to consider them. Am I right here, or am I giving them a bit of an undeserved hard time?

Doing digging, I've found that Zen and Fast appear to the best ISP's. However, they're packages don't suit me. They don't offer any unlimited packages at all. With the amount of P2P I do, I'd need at least a 40-50GB allowance on my line. However, the prices for a package like that tend to be between £30-35 a month. That's too much for an internet package.

Can anyone suggest an ISP and package for me please? To clarify, I'm currently on unlimited 4MB with Pipex. I'm after top, top reliability, fast speeds and a high download limit. If I would sacrifice one, it would be speed over the other two. I'm not prepared to pay over £25p/m for my internet.

Cheers guys!

make sure your 12 month contract has already expired otherwise you have to pay some penalty (not sure what it is right now it changes occasionally).

and keep an eye on your bills afterwards in case they continue to charge you.

If you are on about Fast4 it is £20 for migrations and £85 for new connections, Pipex I do not know about...

lol well they think I am too positive about them but these people are not customers themselves.

I have been with them since October and they are definitely the best ISP I have ever been with, they deliver what they advertise and that explains my positivity.

No more than normal, there have been stuck ip profile issues that do of course get resolved however it can take time due too BT, although as repeated constantly the stuck ip profile issues happens with all ISP's also the past talked about DNS problems which I have not experienced as I have not the stuck ip profile but people did say that switching to OpenDNS solved their DNS issues.

In fact Zen do offer an unlimited up to 8mbps package for £79 + vat

The free SKy package has a 2GB usage allowance and is only available on exchanges that have been unbundled by them and for subscribers on a minimum of a £15 per month TV package. Likewisefor the Sky mid package which has a 40GB allowance and Max which is £10 per month and subject to a fair usage policy.

LLU services are cheaper to provide than BT based services, in comparison SKy's BT based Connect package costs about £17 per month with the same usage limit as their LLU based Mid, but £12 more a month, but still good value for a BT IPstream based service.

My reseach suggests getting Sky's LLU services set-up doesn't always go smoothly but the service once sorted is supposed to be good. I intend to try them anyway.

£79!, what extras do you get?

Extras? Cheap unlimited ISP's services are the ones that usually come with extras, such as too high a ratio of customers to centrals, congested centrals and traffic management

£79 is very reasonable for the service they are offering, it is obviously aimed at heavy business users.

I get the exact same thing from Fast4!, for such a high price I would expect some naff VOIP service that I could get without them and some Antivirus package etc...

I would get that package if i could pay the price, I get 50gig a month which is hard not to use up on the free newsgroups and never once had slow speeds because of network issues, the email is flawless and no traffic shaping like 99% like pipex, plusnet, AOL etc etc.

If I did pay the 79 quid i would be in the 1TB mark downloading.

i think thats the point mel is making, true unlimited really does cost that much.

potentially if a user thrashes an 8 meg connection 24/7 the costs for the isp can potentially run into the thousands (says an isp rep although i forget who). so yeah the price isnt bad at all

Well Sky seems to have a channel for absoloutely everything these days but I do not see it working out *sigh*

Erm whoever edited out mine and Zag5's amsuing banter you may want to rid the thread of this post as it makes little sense now.

ManOfMeans if I was in your postition I would definitely switch too Fast4, you have £20 too lose if you want to leave within the first twelve months but a hell of a lot of money you could save!
