advice needed for newbie

Firstly, Hello. :)

Now to business.

I have been using a wireless service that just joined with village internet.....and all you need to know is I've given up and bt have just reconnected my phone line

Problem 1: My father decided to get broadband and he has opted for Tiscali. I have noticed many, many reviews/comments about Tiscali and it doesnt look too good. He's getting the 1mb package with smart talk thrown in for good measure....£21.99, which seems ok if everything was running smoothly. The line isn't activated until 8/2/05 and he has not received the modem yet. Should I get him to cancel before its too late? (how? phone number?) or have they improved since last year? Will there be a problem cancelling and getting on with another provider straight away?

And now for my problems.......

Problem 2: My BT line has been reconnected for 3/4 days but the asdl availability checker does not know my number. Is this gonna cause any problems when trying to sign up for my broadband?

Problem 3: I want a broadband connection I can use for browsing, gaming and p2p use' so Im thinking an unlimited service would be best. I would prefer a 1mb service. Perhaps a free modem, but I was wanting to set up a wireless router, so this is not a must. (btw, an suggestions for hardware?) I dont mind paying £30 a month, but thats about my limit.

I have seen good things about a few isp's but could you point out any problems with them. Which provider I should consider, etc, etc.

My shortlist:

ZEN
PIPEX
FIREFLY
NDO
DEMON

I think thats about it. There is just too much choice....I didnt have any option but to go wireless until this month so I'm a little overawed by it all.

1. A relative has Tiscali but never talks about it to me - which you might take as a positive sign. Best to check the ADSLGuide forums - click --> link , there seem to be some unhappy customers there. Plus they don't currently support migration, should there be a problem. :(

2. Can't coment on this; though a rep either on here or ADSLguide should be able to help you out.

3. "Unlimited" may turn out to be a dirty word for residential ISPs. Basically BT are changing the way they charge ISPs for ADSL. Plusnet have been forced to introduce caps - though the final size of these is currently being debated. Many _very_ heavy users are jumping ship to Zen for instance; so you have to wonder how long Zen will hold out against caps.

As for ISPs Zen (free eight IP block) and NDO are often praised here. Another relative uses Pipex and I've had no complaints from him. Can't speak for the rest, personally I've been with Zen and Plusnet who both have highly active customer forum teams e.g. here and ADSLguide - it's always a good sign when a company's staff chat to users, in public, on a daily basis.
