Advice needed please !

Hi there !, After 11 years in the USA (Dallas) I've decided to come home to the UK. I am moving to Kent (just outside Greatstone) - can anybody recomend a ISP for me, not looking for much, maybe 5mb/s down and 1mb/s up with unlimited usage ?

Also, is there a generic SMTP thing I can use to send e-mail via my US email address (using outlook) I know I can recive my e-mail OK but not send it ? (using TX.RR.COM - Texas Roadrunner)

Any help/advice would be very welcome

many Thanks

Scott

It depends on what is available at the local telephone exchange in the area moving to and how much you are willing to pay.

Check out the exchange checker at http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php to see what is available.

Thanks for that link, it really helped, there are only 2 isp's in my new area, TALK TALK & AOL !

I hear mixed things about talk talk but i think it's whom i'm going to go with !

Any comments ?

Cheers

If it came to a choice between TalkTalk and AOL, AOL wouldn't even get a consideration... (12 months of sheer hell :crap:)

I'm with Talk Talk now and can't really complain (though some people do). You might want to look at their "Pro" package, which claims to have "unlimited" downloads and the speed is "up to 24mb".

For the price it's not too bad, though the 18 month contracts put many off signing up. It also depends on how "unlimited" it really is. ;)

Looked at There pro package and it looks good to me ! - Thanks for your help !

BTW, wasn't Agrajag the guy who kept being killed by Arthur Dent ;)

DUH!! How come I never noticed that!!!

I am sure there are more ISPs you can use, I suspect those mentioned are the only "LLU" companies in the area.
If you can live with only 1/2Mbps upload there should be plenty more; check out the top10 from the front page and give them a call.

Following on from what Captain said. TalkTalk and AOL are the only unbundled (LLU) ISP choices on your exchange but any BT based ISP will also be available. Just expect BT based services to be more expensive and less flexible (unlimited usage allowances are not the norm; not that "unlimited" really exists as advertised anyway). ISPs like IDNet, Zen, Xilo (BT and LLU), Fast.co.uk and ICUK are worth checking out.

I just got an email from TalkTalk which included this:

At TalkTalk we're continuing to invest millions in our next generation broadband network - so great value comes with unrivalled levels of performance and service.

Faster Speeds
This investment has allowed us to deliver something special to all our broadband customers. Over the next few months, we'll be increasing the maximum broadband speed across our network to a superfast 24Meg. The actual top speed you'll get will depend on your line and location, but many customers will see an improvement in their download speeds.

Sounds like "up to 24mb" will be the standard speed now, instead of being a £4 per month add-on.

Even I would agree that Talk Talk aren't the best ISP in the world, but if your choices are limited you could do a lot worse.

Interesting, I'll see if they can offer some comment on that.

Thanks for all the help, Will be flying in on Wednesday so I will contact them (Talk Talk) ASAP when I get there, what sort of time frame do you think I'm looking at from me first calling them till I have net access ?

Thanks again

Scott

Taslk Talk took over AOL and ruined it. Without my permission they changed my excellent service to their cut down version. Then offered me free talk talk if I used their phone lines. I didn't know I was now with them, just that certain changes to the system had taken place. Which took me out of the loop since the new service wouldn't work for me.

Tak Talk is actually quitye good or qwas. They are chasing me for not staying with them for the full 18 months. Now they want 90 plus finders fees for a crapware modem and some filters and a usb wire.

And the otherwise free service. How come they had to send me all that I already had their even more cheapo AOL usb. And to cap it all they were still dunning me for my original AOL connection. (I never checked the bank statements and of course trying to get any information from talk talk is not going to be easy as they are currently engaged in illegal spywar hosting activities.)

But I'd go back to them straight away. Anything is better than this pubic library with its awful Microsoft crapware

The worse thing about TalkTalk is when the time comes that you decide to leave them. Most other ISPs wont give you the time of day until you get your phone line back under BT's control, which can be a serious PITA.

My contract is up at the end of this month, and i'm still trying to decide wether or not to stay with them.

If leaving Talk Talk means a week or two of down time, or even worse, trying to find someone at BT who knows what the hell they are doing, then I might be better off staying put until the Digital Region project brings FTTC to my area around November next year.
