Advice on 4g/5g broadband

The only time that you'll see a difference is if you were specifically comparing Three broadband with a Smarty SIM. In this case Three don't have CGNAT (Sharing one IP Address with multiple users) whereas Smarty do use this. But you're saving a considerable amount of money and for the most part not likely to notice any problems arising from this. Speed and stability should be comparable.
The scancomm sims should be able to use the 3internet APN and avoid the Carrier Nat (At least it did last time I tried using that APN).

But the FUP is enforced on them and when you hit it then the SIM will be disabled until whatever day of the month it is when the quota refreshes.

I'd still look at smarty at least initially as that has no commitment whereas the Scancomm ones are for a bunch of time paid upfront.

The scancom ones do indeed work with 3Internet. I can confirm from recent experience.

Yep although I did find the MTU was rather low on that APN for some reason, wonder if there's some tunnelling going on inside 3's network.

I think mine is on one of the CG-NAT APN's at the moment as I was checking to see if the speed is any different depending on APN.

I tend to egress via AAISP L2TP anyway so makes little difference to me if it's CG-NAT or not.

Hi all,

Thanks again for all your help and support. We got the keys to the new place a few days ago and I've been messing around with the connections. Interestingly all had speeds that were good enough to do things like play Youtube videos, despite 2 out of the 3 sim cards we tried (EE & Three networks through Talkhome & Smarty) only showing 3g on my phone.

In the end, it seems Vodafone (we tried Lebara but have now ordered Talkmobile unlimited) has by far the most superior coverage. I used up the entire 5gb limit in a day on doing speedtests lol and ended up testing speeds of between 24 - 148 mbps download and 11-29 mbps upload, with speeds generally hovering around 30-40 down and 20 up, which I think is pretty good? Note these speeds are just from the regular google speed test and are just from using the sim card in the router and using different spots. I was also pleasantly surprised that the connection did not appear to drop a single time during the day. A few more questions below which I hope someone can answer:

- I haven't messed around with the settings on the router, just plugged in and started. Is it worth to login (or whatever you do) to the router and mess around with the settings, or will there be nothing to gain from this?
- The router gives the best speeds in the front of the house, but the back room speeds are a lot lower when the router is in the front. Are there things like wifi extenders available for these kinds of connections that I could buy to increase the speeds in other rooms?

Thanks again for your help! I'm so happy to have more than 5mbps down /1mbps up which was predicted by the broadband providers. I've ordered the unlimited sim card from TalkMobile as well which I'm hoping will work just as well as the Lebara one I tried it with :)
