Advice on switch to voip

Hi guys, I’m currently on a business phone and broadband tariff, it has 2 physical landlines on it and 1 broadband package on one of the numbers, I’m wanting to convert one of the lines to a voip provider whilst taking the the other line to a bt domestic plan with broadband, how could this switch be completed without disabling or loosing one of the numbers and what voip providers could be useful considering this line I want to put on one is used rarely and only needs 1 phone so I don’t need a lot of calls.

Thanks in advance,
Xavicc

Andrews and Arnold VoIP would be your best option £1.44 per month and calls are fairly cheap as well. You can port your number to them for £15. Best to move the number which is not the line supplying the broadband (as that will be switched off when you port the number).
No idea how you move a BT business broadband line to BT residential, best to ask BT directly.

I’ve been with Voipfone for a number of years. Excellent service, support and very reasonable prices.

What do you mean about the line being switched off, should I cancel my contract with my current provider first

How does the whole process work as they are both registered with a different number and I’m wanting the landing on the one that it’s not on currently and they are both with the same provider and I’m not currently with bt

Don't cancel the contract (that uses the number you wish to keep) with your current provider until your phone number has been ported to your new (VoIP) provider.

So speak to the company I’m with now, let them know that I want to port the number that the broadband is using to VoIP, sign up for the VoIP contract and then when it’s ported switch the other line to bt which is the number my broadband isn’t currently using?

Normally you start with the company you're switching the number to. So, for example say A&A or Voiphone etc. They will send you a porting authority form which you fill in and send back. They will then tell your current provider. Once the switch is complete THEN you tell your current provider you're leaving (or taking a new product). Its a proper ball ache and will probably take quite a few weeks in total. You have to do it this way round or there's a risk that your current provider will cease the service before the number is ported. If that happens the port fails and your number will be lost forever.

Cheers for the info guys, i'm just a little confused with the whole process, as the current business plan has 2 separate landlines included in the same contract, one of them doing the internet and a phone and the other being another physical line wired to the house, I want one of the lines to go to BT with one of the numbers and put the internet on that (this is the number thats not currently doing the broadband) and port the other number to voip, its just confusing as when I attempt to port the number thats currently doing the broadband will I loose my broadband and will the entire contract be cancelled? loosing the second line, I basically want to split my current plan into 2 provideres instead of 1.

Am I correct in saying I should port the number that I want to go to voip to a voip provider first and once that completes port the other number and broadband plan to BT, its essential that both numbers are kept.

Sorry to be a hassle guys, its all a bit complicated

Unless anyone else can answer this, I think I'd recommend speaking to someone in tech support at (eg) Andrews & Arnold (A&A). I'm sure they'd be able to advise and they seem quite accessible and helpful.

I would do it that way. If you initiate a port on the number you want to go to VoIP and it triggers a losing notification from BT, then that should give you details of any consequences. If BT say that to porting will cease a service you wish to keep (even if you are moving it later) then you can simply ask the gaining provider to stop the number port.
If we were doing this with line number that supported broadband then we'd do the broadband first, get a commit date and then do the number port and match the porting date to the broadband commit date.
