Been gifted a used MS Surface Pro 7, with Windows 10.

Being prompted to upgrade to Win 11.

Is it worth it? Any pitfalls , by experienced users please?

Thanks

That I've heard, when you get used to it, it's not so bad, just beware for bloatware that microsoft makes harder to uninstall, settings underneath settings then underneath more settings to change simple things, lots of AI etc.

You can hang onto Win 10 until December 14th 2025 (which is supposedly the EOL date for Windows 10 unless they extend it)

Oh and by the way, windows 10 is going up in market share after what microsoft's been doing recently to windows 11 too.

If I'm honest I'd just stick with windows 10 for now anyway even if I could upgrade here.

I'd downgrade it to Windows 8.1

In all honesty, Windows 11 isn't that bad. The bloat situation isn't as bad as it was on 10 as you can uninstall more stuff (like Cortana for example). 11's generally stable for me too, I haven't had any major issues other than File Explorer acting up.

Not sure how well it runs on a tablet though. No point recommending Linux as I don't know how well Linux tablets are either.

It's pretty much the same as Windows 10 at it's core. The main difference is the UI which you may or may not like.

one think l do miss is the previews on picture folders, though lve gotten used to it now..

that "Recall" feature was apparently going to record a snapshot of your screen every minute or so, apparently.

At least from what i knew anyway.
yes indeed,
and that's the scariest thing I have heard re privacy in many years.

Records screenshots, parses to text into a local db and then off to Microsoft and/or the highest bider (AI,CIA etc). 😂
It's funny cause it's true...

As if they don't already collect enough data!

I've spent at least a year or more turning certain data collection stuff of that I can without reducing usability, and even now they still collect a lot of data from me.

It's one thing Linux kind of does better, privacy.

However so does Apple, and that's kind of where the whole "mac vs windows" war started

Yes, apple is better privacy-wise, they seem to respect the user more, that's for sure.
That said it won't take much for things to turn around and I won't be surprised when that happens.

Ultimately Linux or *bsd is the only way with more certainty, but even there can be problems especially with commercially supported distros such as Ubuntu. We've already seen the death of CentOS at the hand of Redhat. Always be wary of commercial interests.
