All in one printer help

rruwalton

ISP Rep
I would appreciate some helpful feedback on this question.

I would like an all in one printer. However, which one?

Argos are doing this one 1/2 price
Lexmark

There's also an HP for less.

All help is appreciated

Thanks

:)

I've never been a fan of the Lexmark range so I wouldn't rate it as very good.

HP have always had superior inkjets and their all in one range is pretty good too. The drawback is when you come to the cost of replacement cartridges. You have to be careful that a cheap initial price does not snare you into buying expensive replacement parts.

Personally I would look at some of Canon's offerings especially due to the price of replacement ink tanks. I tmay cost you more initially but over time I think it may work out cheaper and better.

I'd agree with that.

I actually bought the Lexmark X1180 All-in-one as an "emergency measure" (i.e. I was broke and it was going dirt cheap on a special offer) when my old printer (a Canon) and a rather iffy scanner which I'd bought secondhand both packed up within a week of each other.

I really can not recommend it and will be getting a Canon replacement once the court case with the moths over the eviction notice has been settled. The quality is less than brilliant, the one-sided paper holder wheel leads to things coming out cockeyed, and the price of replacement inks is horrendous.

RRU,

I have had the bad experience of using a Lexmark printer and to be honest with you I don't think you can find a worst printer than that.

I read some really good report some time ago regarding print quality / running cost. It appears that the cheap printers have huge running costs. One the Epson was the worst for running costs.

Canon make excellent printers. I don't know about all in one, as a rule I don't like those products. Never feel tempted to buy them! I know the idea is brilliant but in practical terms it just doesn't work. Say that you don't like the printer, or the printer brakes down, you would then need to buy another printer / scanner / photocopier

Good luck

The HP I have now is by far the best printer I have ever had and although the replacements arent cheap they do last a long time and can be refilled without problems; my original black is on its 8th or 9th refill without any drop in quality.
I wouldnt recommend Lexmark to my worst enemy, some of them give good print quality but the replacement carts cost MORE than the damn printer in many cases.
Also watch out for famous name PC makers whoose printers are just rebadged Lexmarks.

I have had Lexmark, HP and Canon printers. Lexmark are rubbish....HP is very good, but the cartridges cost as much as some new printers.

Canon...excellent and the cartridges are very reasonable.

Blimey, I don't believe this - a thread on ISPr where we are all in agreement!

Surely there must be *somebody* out there somewhere who thinks that Lexmark printers are the finest pieces of machinery ever made and the cost of replacement inks is trivial - show yourself, sir, and let's have a good old argument!

I've had Epson' Cannon and HP; HP is by far the cheapest to run long term with by far the best print quality and speeds as fast as my mums expensive laser printer.

<rant>I'm not impressed with hps later printers. Espically the newer pro printer which have drivers that won't run on non-power user accounts. How can it be classed a enterprise level printer when it won't work on a typical enterprise setup.</rant>

I'd say looking at current HP printers, HP has sort of dropped the ball lately, with Epson wining on print quality and cannon winning on total cost (ie cheaper running costs)

I have a LExmark printer, but it's only really used for basic printing - anything that needs particularly high quality I do at work, since I work for a printer manufacturer it makes sense!

Epson have the print quality (particularly photos), Canon are a bit cheaper to run, but don't tend to last as long, HP rely on their reputation and market position to maintain their profits.

As a rule of thumb, the more the printer costs to buy, the less it costs to run - with the really chep printers, the only way to make a profit is to charge a lot for the consumables.

One tip though - if you use you printer to print photo's - stop. You are probably paying 50p plus per photo. The best way I know of is to wait until you have a few pics to print, then send them (online if you have broadband) to www.bonusprint.co.uk. You get pictures printer on professional photo systems for as little as 10p each, and the service is excellent.

Good post akbray. I have had many Epson printers and one HP. The HP was a good printer at the time. Epson printers use too much ink which makes them expensive to run. I nearly bought another Epson three months ago but I found out the printer I was looking at, R200 I think, was very good for photo printing and rather poor at text printing. HP printers at the moment are not as good as once were. So I went for a Canon, I never had one before and so far the IP4000 is the best all round printer I've ever had.

On my current experience I don't see myself buying another Epson printer for while.

Your tip on bonusprint is a good one - thanks

My local Tesco does 50 6x4 prints for £5, and it's a one hour service, so no postage to pay. The quality seems very good, certainly miles better than anything my poor epson printer can produce.
