What do all the ISP's i checkm y number with say i can get the full 8mb or 20.5 (on llu) when i know my line is 4km long , if i were not internet savvy and signed up to a service expecting 20mb i would be very upset on go live date .

Currently with BE* 58dB loop loss 5mb sync .

Someone needs to get a grip on these checkers and put a more reliable source in place

Nildram 20mb
Eclipes 20mb
Tiscali 8mb
plusnet 8mb
o2 16mb
ukonline 10mb

The availability checks are all linked to BT's so it is BT who needs to try and place a better method.

BT gives me 3mb / 3.5mb , so how can they be linked , if they are retrieving information from BT database shouldn't it be the same ?

BT should make available line lenght to the public or have a test done from within the exchange charging a fee (they need it) this way you will know pretty much what you can expect , bypassing all these fake checkers. If i had the know how i would do it myself but sadly i don't .

BT tell me that it is unlikely that I will get broadband due to the length of my line.
I have been on broadband for the past 4 years, albeit rather slow, but many times better than dialup. (1.3mbs).

It should be the same, I just tried plusnet's checker and it was for mine. In my case BT's data underestimates my line, which a few years ago resulted in AOL insisting that my line was only good for a 512kbps fixed rate connection, although the BTW checker does estimate that I can get 3.5mbps on adslmax (compared to the 6+mbps I actually get). BT's estimate did correct itself while I was on an IPstream connection, they apparanetly use the line monitoring data while you have a BTW based ADSL product, but don't save it if you subsequently switch to a LLU product  The speed estimate also collapsed while I had a line fault, which is not very helpful if you ring your ISP to try to get it fixed.

Ofcom have a voluntary speed code of practice and some of the ISPs you mention have agreed to it http://www.ofcom.org.uk/telecoms/ioi/copbb/list/ - If those ISP's checkers significantly differ from btwholesale's http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/ADSLChecker.TelephoneNumberOutput then I'd guess it is more likely to be a bug than intentional.

Op,

If you could post your router stats as well then we might be able to see whether the lower speed is another issue rather than the line. Problems can also occur on your end of the line too, such as interference from other electrical appliances or a noisy line due to bad wiring etc.

Also, what speed estimates do you get for Standard ADSL, ADSL MAX and ADSL2+ on our checker:

Speed drops in the evening untill around 10am to this , around that time it reconnects @5.3mb, i don't think anything is wrong with my line 1.83km Crow distance 3.86 road, bt now show 6.5ADSL and 9.521CN lol, still can figure out how some of them are getting 20+mb

Curious, your SN margin seems to be identically low in both the upstream and downstream direction; I've not seen that before. Generally though, a low SN/SNR is not good for your speed. Elsewhere your downstream Line Attenuation of 59.5 is high and suggests that you should only be getting somewhere between 2 and 3Mbps.

Given these stats and what the checkers are predicting for you, I would guess that there is interference or possibly even some noise on your line that's causing the problem. This ADSL tips guide has some suggestions that might help:

Also, provided you have a BT NTE5 socket, then you can buy and easy to install an iPlate that will reduce line interference.. often significantly. This might improve your speed.

Hi cheers for the feedback , the line is brand new install no noise or interferance ,not like my other one that is a little shorter @ 51dB Attnuation that only produces 2500 ip profile 21CN too , now that line has problems 834GT _ ADSL Natrion filter face plate , BT checker does report correct on that line

Hmm, if the line is brand new, then might the checker currently still be reporting the estimated speed for the line that was previously allocated the new line's phone number.
