Alternatives to Zone Alarm

I have just spent a day and a half sorting out issues connected with uninstalling Zone Alarm from a Win 98 SE PC.

Since doing so I have discovered that this is quite a widespread problem and having read : <a href="http://www.btinternet.com/~splyons/problems.html" target="_blank">http://www.btinternet.com/~splyons/problems.html</a>
I am not very confident about einstalling this as my Firewall of choice.

Can anyone make any alternative recommendations for a home user of Windows 98 SE who intends to upgrade from a dial-up connection to ADSL as soon as this issue is resolved ?

My personal favourite is Outpost - it's free and you can customise it. Go here for details -

FYI, the article refers to ZoneAlarm 2.0.6/ 2.6
The latest version is 3.1.291, altho tbh I find the new version a bit sucky (works ok for me on WinME, but UI stinks IMO):/
NB, AFAIK if you are upgrading to ADSL you can get a thing that'll hang off the back of your PC and be a firewall as well as an ADSL modem: I'd assume this'd beat any software firewall for blocking incoming stuff, e.g.,
<a href="http://www.insight.com/uk/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=LNKNA01UVV" target="_blank">http://www.insight.com/uk/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=LNKNA01UVV</a>
I dont have ADSL (snarlsnarl) so i dont know if these modem/firewall thingys are any good but prolly worth a look I'd think..
Also <a href="http://grc.com" target="_blank">http://grc.com</a> (shields up, probe ports) has various bits of advice on securing your PC's ports against hackers: afaik if you are a single PC home user & follow the advice there re: removing shares/ closing ports etc you'll prolly be alright anyway..
I think I'm going to give outpost a go tbh, cos I've so far been unable to get the new ZA to distinguish between local and internet server permissions:/

Just adding my support for Outpost... I know it's already been mentioned, but I also feel it's the best solution available for the home user - especially for free :)

Yep I agree with Outpost, this is what we tell all our users to use, and to date I have not heard of any problems with it.

I've always used outlook and never with any trouble.Only trouble is not being very technically savy i don't really know what to allow access and what to block.Any hints mwould be much appreciated.

The best way to work it is to accept ONLY the things you recognise or Outpost lists as a low risk. The firewall itself is usually pretty good at keeping hackers at bay even if you do allow a few things you don't recognise - but be careful.

If something's persistent at trying to access the net, and you're unsure, post in here or some forums and someone'll know what to do.

Alternatively, you could go for the less safe option of switching Outpost onto the "allow most" mode.

Cheers guys put it on block most just to be on safe side.By the way like i said been using it for a while now but never once been alerted about any attacks or anything does that mean i'm (a) Lucky (b) already given it access. When i used Zonealarm was getting alerts all the time.P.S i use AOL (don't know if this matters)but then again even when i used IE never had alerts with outpost.Cheers for help anyways guys.
