Amazon to replace Android on Fire devices

I hate modern software development with everything eventually turning into a fat, sluggish "web app". It's lazy and it's slow.

"Modern"? When I got a BBC micro in '82. I wrote a quick Basic program (interpreter) to display multiple iterations of all the characters then tweaked it for maximum speed. Watched it run and print the elapsed time ... OK. I then wrote the same is assembly language and bang! It finished in a screen flash - assumed I'd made a mistake but adding a delay showed the code was fine. Lesson learnt. :)

That's the issue and Lucian uses the correct term "Lazy".

Most of our key core systems are still running old 80s code with glossy front ends and web development is through layers of bloat fuelled by the 5 min websites, push advertising and web designers using the fastest desktops and massive screens totally disconnected from what the consumer is experiencing.

The Internet now consumes more energy that the 5th largest economy and with AI it is going to explode. Yes the industry is getting more efficient but there is a basic principle here that IT shouldn't be treated as a bottomless pit even if processing and network speeds increase.

Really can't see the benifit in that, it either Runs Android or it Doesn't, sounds like thier just going to tie themselves in knots with the changes.

Microsoft had a simular issue when they launched a Windows Phone that run Android Kit Kat moons ago, (Nokia X, XL and Nokia X2) which had the Windows Phone Front Page look but run Android APKs without the Playstore, nice idea but a sadly a total disaster in the end and was soon scrapped.

Sounds like they're going to replace the whole thing with a browser of sorts as devs are told to write apps in React, so basically JavaScript.
Not impressed.

100%. The lowest cost model to development does not equal either good performance or a good experience for the end-user, but then who cares about that any more?

Guess this will kill those firesticks those of us have blocked updates and their launcher on.

There's a better report here..

Seems it's about licensing issues..

Quote from above article:

There are larger implications for Amazon decoupling itself from Android's obligatory open source offerings. Google previously sought to enforce a clause in its contracts with companies that offer its Play Store and Google services on their Android devices that they will not seek to use a fork of Android, like Fire OS, in other devices. Amazon and Google struck a deal (also reported by Roettgers) allowing for Fire TV manufacturers like TCL to continue making TVs with Android TV and Fire TV systems. Google's official stance, however, remained the same. Even better than a contract-bending deal, perhaps, is not having to strike that deal at all.

Google wants to control their own advertising , by debarring others from freely forking Android and Amazon not happy about it.

The advertisers' alliance is up in arms about this move and Amazon has done this to protect their advert revenues and maintain independence. They have deep pockets too. Its all about control (mechanism)

Except that people sideloading firesticks with streaming apps, will suffer, going forward.

There was an interesting article about this in "The Register".

Will be a bit of a bummer gor me, as I have a fire tablet with the playstore sideloaded

I imagine though that no sideloading may ve good from an image POV, like no 'loaded' firesticks etc

Not 100% sure who makes the Firesticks could be Roku, simular thing happened a few years with the NowTV Boxes (also made by Roku) where a deliberate Kill Off Side Loading Update was released OTA, the attraction then was you could Sideload the Free Plex App on them which opened up all sorts goodies for a cheap way to use the NowTV Boxes for a Home Entertainment use.

Yeah, pretty sad, more things ruined due to greed.
I run Kodi on the Firestick Max now, it's a good platform for that, but it looks like I might have to go back to the Raspberrypi.
It only goes to show, if it's not open source you're at the mercy of someone's shareholders. Un-frakking-reliable.
