AMD dropped the ball. 6600XT mid range card at a high end price.

As I've been in the market for a mid-range GPU since building my new PC in February I got a bit excited to See the newly released 6600XT might just fit the bill.

Checking out Gamers-nexus review, MEH! just sums it up nicely. (Props to GN for the gigabyte exploding PSU segment!)

Unfortunately AMD like Nvidia has decided to go the "we'll know its a mid-end card but we'll price it high-end anyway" route. So now you've got literal mid-end cards arriving at the "distributors" and they whack another 25-50% on the RRP price because "availability".

So your options are go for a 2014 GeForce 710, onboard APU graphics, get ripped off finding a 3 year old card twice its RRP on ebay or stick with what you have. Other than that you're looking at spending £400+.

AMD's own shop laughably has two card for £1500 or its April 2018 launched Radeon RX 550X for £212.39!

There is literally a gaping hole in the graphics card market with no mid-tier graphics cards available in 2021 and thats because AMD and Nvidia want it that way. Whatever happened to the vanilla RX6600????

Roll on 2022.....i think.

It was bound to happen.

AMD has been playing the we're your friend card for a while but greed always gets the best of everything. They're a company, after all.

I bought an Nvidia 1650 card for way too much brand new after waiting in an online queue. It was by far the most expensive component in my new build. I was fairly economical with parts though and even got a few second hand parts. Using an AMD R5 2600 for example - performance of their CPUs is excellent, even the ones released a few years ago.

That's interesting TTJJ, I've got a R5 2600x in my new build. It was far better value for money than anything newer from AMD, which was why I chose it. Saying that I wish I'd gone for one with a GPU built in now.

I'd been considering a RX580 graphics card first, then veered off towards a 1650 or 1660s, but its just got really daft now. I mean an RX550 for £212 on AMD's website, what planet do they think we're on??

This isn't something that's going to change. The days of buying a midrange graphics card for £200 are gone. Even if supply returns to normal, they've set a new precedent now and it's unlikely to change. That's consumerism for you.

My pc specs are Ryzen 3700X with 16GB ram (3600MHz) with Geforce GTX 1050Ti OC Edition and 500GB NVMe £435 total price is a win win for me because I don't play gaming or overclocked it. Only video editing and online 1080P/1440P streaming from youtube, netflix etc.

Thats a great system, I just don't fancy spending £160+ on a second hand 4GB graphics card released in 2016. I would like to get some life out of any GPU I buy.
