AMD passes Intel in market cap

I'll need to pick my next computer setup soon. Being focused on power efficiency, it's likely to be based around one of AMD or Intel's mid-range chips. Currently, it's a toss up between the AMD 5600G or X vs Intel's i5-12500. But there's a new generation coming soon, so that may change.

I have been thinking of it for a while, but to be honest this machine is still fine, but it takes 150 watts when doing nothing. LOL, I just thought I dod a check to see how much it cost me in July as i have a smart plug that can show how much energy it uses connected. According to the smart plug, I used 27.86KW/H, now this is the strange thing, when I looked at how much my energy cost per KW/H, it is 27.86p. :). So this machine cost me around £7 to use last month.
So yes, maybe a more efficient machine would be a good idea, which is another reason I am looking at a Mac mini.

Yeah.. The times we live in.. They require low tdp 😭

If anyone is looking for a low power CPU it may be worth looking at the AMD GE series(like the G series but only 35 watt TDP). I'm using a AMD Ryzen 4650GE($144 on eBay) to write this and it's fine for normal desktop tasks(there is an 8 core 4700GE available but it's typically around $300).

5800X here, felt it was a good enough CPU to get the job done and it has dealt with everything i've thrown at it. But I have a 3080 Ti to go with that purchased during the pandemic at an extortionate price. My other PC is a 5600G and it performs well too but I mainly use that for server stuff (nas, docker, webserver, wireguard etc) . I didn't wait for PCIe 5 and DDR5, I felt that if I can get 10G over my home lan that's good enough for many years so I paired my desktop and NAS with a Seagate Firecuda NVMe too.

Since 2 years ago I run on AMD Athlon 3000G with built-in Vega GPU.
Paid £40 for it at the time, it's more than 3x now..
Perfect for all I needed for work (mostly web browsers and terminals) as well as some light virtualisation.
