AMD Ryzen Zen 4 and DDR5 ECC UDIMM

I'm interested to hear opinions on the AMD Ryzen Zen 4 range of processors from the 7950X3D (approx GBP 640) down to the 7600 (approx GBP 200).

The context is that I've got a Supermicro AS-3015MR-H8TNR on order so eventually will be wanting 8x Zen 4 AM5 processors.

My current thinking is that I want to start with a 7950X3D for combined OpenStack and OpenHPC homelab testing. And might go for 3x 7600 to allow PXE-boot testing and eventually have a test Ceph deployment. This leaves 4x additional processors to pick after preliminary testing.

Due to the cost of DDR5 ECC UDIMM, I'm wondering if I'm better off leaning towards higher core-count parts rather than the potential false economy of going with the 7600.

Earlier in the week got my hands on one of these and it’s been quite refreshing for something relatively inexpensive and small footprint. Based around a Ryzen 9 7940HS processor (8 Cores/16 Threads,16M Cache, up to 5.2 GHz)

It's still at least a month out before I need to splash any further cash but it's been interesting to catch up to the current state of play with Zen 4 as I didn't really stay current with Zen 3 etc.

The temperature sensitivity of the V-Cache is quite interesting. The heterogeneity of the 7950X3D already meant I was leaning towards the 7950X for my requirements but temperature sensitivity of the V-Cache suggests some care might be needed if the server is placed in a room which might overheat in the summer.

I've recently seen mention of Ryzen 8000 series which is something to be looked into, and I've got another browser open regarding Zen 4c at the moment.

Another interesting observation is that U.2 and U.3 NVMe devices remain cripplingly expensive which I was a little surprised by given recent prices of SATA SSDs and other flash and solid state devices. Random screenshot from ebuyer.com for posterity (presumably, in pound terms, the numbers will be laughably low in the future).

Not a good review!

Because you don't have access to memory voltage controls, you effectively cannot change memory timings and can't use faster XMP memory sticks. There's also no control over the memory controller ratio and the infinity fabric frequency, which seems to be hamper both the iGPU and CPU performance. A future revision of the BIOS or of the hardware that allows for control of these settings would be a major upgrade.Lastly, the included SSD/Windows install. I had very frequent BSODs and the PC couldn't detect the SSD multiple times.

Like I said my experience with them has been fine. I have no idea what product this review relates to or who wrote it, but the UM790 Pro I have seems perfectly fine. Time will tell.
