AMD Upgrade..

Hello folks,

I have a quick question..

HERE is motherboard.
I currently run a AMD 3500+ Athlon

Can I take that chip out and plug in a new bionic Dual Core like THIS or is life not that simple? Or maybe one not so powerful..but you see what I'm getting at....

Hi Awegin,

I have just looked at the CPU support on the motherboard and the list shows that it will support upto 4600 dual core. If you go to the page about your motherboard and click on Looking for CPU support, fill in the details it will show what CPU's will fit.

Paul.

l recommend ASUS boards tho to be honest, particularly the M2N-SLI Deluxe there is a version which has wireless on board which is useful, currently have that board installed in my own system with an AMD X2 4600+ in any case butler explained it best.

Andy..as always, thanks. Ya know..I think life is simple when you are young and old. It's the areas in between things complicate up!! lol

I dont understand the diff from Opteron or Athlon tbh. I'm guessin you posted the 4200 link for a reason tho..When we built this pc.. 'bang for buck' is a phrase i remember..and the 'older' chips as ever, become cheaper...

Maybe with a RAM upgrade and the CPU it would hold me for a time again..though I'm always restricted by my AGP Graphics. SLi next time 'timeless'...

Would my 350w psu still be ok with the new chip?

thx also sledgehammer.

Just adding an extra Opty v Athlon difference to what butler said, AMD also adds an extra layer of thermal protection to the CPU making it even more stable under hotter conditions. Put another way, for the ordinary consumer it makes them more overclockable.

The difficulty is choosing the right one vs its desktop equivalent (I generally go by Ghz comparison between AMD chips) and if you can then I’d suggest trying to find out if any particular CPU uses the Sandiego (think that’s the name) core or not. Most of the remaining 939’s should have this by now; it just adds the latest SSE (multimedia) instruction set from Intel and is of a smaller construction (lower power).

One more thing, AMD's initial dual core chips were good but not the best for gaming, a 4600/4800 is about equivilant to a single core 4000+ for most titles (Crysis and some others [latest titles] can benefit though).

Hi,

Thx guys..i get the differences now from Opty and Athlon. :)

Gaming is an issue with Crysis looming (not bothered for DX10 tho) and COD4..
Battlefield 3 late next year

I had heard that a 939 dual-core would just plug in, and for £50odd it would be a cheap 'boost'. Plus good for my general pc stuffs..the multi-task ability of the dual-core (obviously designed by a woman) etc etc

(I'm in desperate need of a re-install XP..but i just started a 6 week online course so it needs to wait..eg, I instal a game demo..it plays ok..the rest of the pc hangs and does all manner of nasty things..just for having it installed!)

Andy..takin in what you said..I just did a quick search and found THIS and THIS..but plus a case, psu, new HDD and grafix card..it's outta my reach atm.

Would I need to flash my mb for the chip :crap: (im currently Athlon 3500+)..

I know a guy runs COD4 on a rig similar to mine np (takin on board Mark J's comments on dual core gaming)..With the format I think id be ok there..I just thought for £50 I could totally up my pc for a minimal outlay, that don't happen very often does it? After all...It's silly to go spending lots on this rig..when the same money could go to build a whole new pc sometime in the future.

So it seems gaming wise, I would not gain much from the chip..but for everything else..it would be wonderful.

WoW..that'd be cool.

Testing the water is always better than diving straight in...

Check your PMs...

Guys, I hate to be a wet blanket but (and its a big but) the 6000+ AFAIK doesn't exist in 939 format, its AM2 only. (checked on AMD's site)

here's the spec..

Processor: AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core
Model Number: 6000+
Frequency (MHZ): 3000
L2 Cache Size (KB): 2048
Socket: AM2
Stepping: F3
Manufacturing Tech (CMOS): 90nm SOI
Wattage (W): 125 W
System Bus (MHZ): 2000

I think lowest's site has a misprint. :crap:

TRIaXOR™

No wet blanket at all...

I just posted that as an example.. :)

Actually to find I can have a dual core at all is good news!!

TRIaXOR is correct, never been good at remembering socket numbers l never used but 939 and AM2 are different sockets.

personally l love AM2 and love the X2 range with the right setup things are as cool as anything lost like 20C of temp between my XP chip and the X2 4600+

S939 goes up to an X2 4800+ CPU but that particular chip is now so rare that anybody selling it will stick a premium on top. Might be able to find a few on eBay for more reasonable prices though but I'm always wary of eBay CPU's in case they're fake (overclocked lower rated ones with a new label on the die).

AMD are pretty good, my only gripe with them over the last four years is that they bring out a new socket every 12 months, forcing you to change more than just the CPU in an upgrade.. uggh. Intel at least sticks to the same socket but then their memory controller is off-chip so they lose latency and omg I've gone cross eyed :) .
