An internet connexion without contract for exchange students ?

Hello everybody,

To make it simple, we are 3 french students in university's exchange program for a semester (from now to december).
We got a house but have problems with getting an internet connection for a period of 3/4 months.

We've been to a virgin store and they told us we would have to pay the normal amount (something around 35£) plus an extra of 25£ per months we do not consume as a resiliation fee, all of this because they only offer 9 or 12 months contracts.

I saw while browsing that there was monthly providers but it seems to be crap.

Could you indicate us if you knew of a way to get an internet connexion for less than a lot of money per month?

Thank you very much,

Lucas

could have sworn Aquiss still did monthly contracts.. looks like l was mistaken, they were amazing when l was with them.. l only moved because l wanted fibre along with something more within my affordability (tho thats sorta changing these days). line rental is getting somewhat hefty with sky.

tho weirdly they do have monthly line rental contracts.

EDIT:

hang on a min, didnt catch it the first time l glanced at the page, but they still do the short term contracts http://www.aquiss.net/broadband-family.php

the only drawback however being that they have a data-cap (at least in respects to what my usage would have been like lol).

Pulse8 do monthly contracts on their "fibre" (FTTC) packages too.

Note to student, "connexion" is a company name, you mean "connection"

Ré Aquis, all their packages are listed as "Unlimited", and certainly I have never been capped, despite down/uploading nearly 1TB one month.

For a fixed line, the line rental is always going to be the issue, due to the way BTW charge for it; depending on what they want to use the internet for, they might be better off with a mobile service - more expensive per month for less data allowance, but cheaper over the year.

If large down/uploads are expected, then you need to compare the cost of a monthly ISP + 12 months line rental against the 3-4 months mobile cost.

FYI, a lot of smaller ISPs such as Aquiss charge £13 per month for line rental, the big boys all charge ~£18 or more, so that can save you £60.

On a related subject, it really is time student landlords sorted out a phone/internet service for students, I hear pretty much the same story every September.

Some Landlords do the one my daughter used when she was at Uni had three houses on one block middle house had the VirginMedia connection and was shared to the other two via wirless using external antenas. She seldom complained about the connection a plus side is one of the lads in the house with the router was on the computer studies so IT on tap.
