Hi all looking to get a new isp for a all in one total package,been with zen,xilo but they dont do all in one package for calls,line rental and bb,i,m using the bb for downloads occasionaly and browsing and bbc i player and online gaming i get when i do the speedtest via isp review of around 7-8 mb and i can see my telephone exchange which is not far from my location need help choosing a good isp.was going to go with Bt but bit worried about the download throttling part i dont use p2p was thinking of plusnet or eclipse any other could use some recomendations please need unlimited download and anytime calls,and 0845 and 0870 numbers incl any help much needed ta all :D

If you dont use P2P, do you really need unlimited downloads??

Vispa do internet/line rental/phone call packages, but I am hazy on the phone call side as I rarely use it, you will have to check with their website for the latest details.
The internet side has several packages offering a decent limit for daytime downloads, and effectively unlimited for 00:00 - 08:00 downloads

Sky Broadband (Sky Digital), O2 and BE Broadband all have some fairly well priced bundles and aren't overly agressive with their Traffic Management policies (Sky doesn't have any and O2/BE seem quite flexible).

Hi cheers for that took a look but no good i,m afraid reason looking at bt is the wife wants one them on demand boxes and to get all calls in one neat package ,i enjoy my online gaming and use steam to download and bbc iplayer and the occasional downloads but i have heard probs with bt applying throttling on the bb lines is this true? does anyone else like bt any help with experiences would be good with the bt vision service thanks all

how does the bt vision service work then ? i have a very good draytek router and i understand i have to use the bt router not a idea happy with,like to have some level of control on my bb

The people who have problems with the BT Vision service are:

1. People migrating from cable who think it's a direct alternative/as capable and are disappointed when they find that it is not;
2. People whose lines are less than perfect and/or sub 3Mbps which is when the Vision box seems to struggle to stream - it's only meant to need 2Mbps but an extra margin in hand is useful

It's basically a like a Freeview box (needs an aerial just the same) which also uses the broadband connection to deliver a range of streaming content. The priniciple behind it is a decent one - you only pay for what you want. However there have been complaints (see point 1) about the range of stuff available on the platform. Have a look on the BT website and see if what it offers, appeals.

Using it does seize some control of the broadband service from you, and necessarily so. It uses QOS to set aside 1.5Mbps downstream so the streaming is prioritised. Especially important on slow connections (sub 3Mbps) and it means that if you're watching streaming content and someone else in the house tries to watch, say, BBC iPlayer, it prioritises the Vision service over that so as not to interrupt the viewing.

many thanks for that yes it is a good idea but may just get a humax 500gb hard reive and use that for freeview may be easier until the bbt vision has a bit of fine tuning in the future ..

If you were going for BT Vision then the choice of line and broadband supplier was already determined since it had to be BT. If not, then your choices remain open. I'm assuming you can't get cable, since the 50Mbps or 100Mbps service would appear to satisfy all your requirements as well as being very quick and coming with a 30 day money back guarantee if you're not happy.

Alternatively you could wait a few months (possibly until Spring 2012) until the YouView IPTV service gets its commercial launch through several ISPs, which should offer something similar to what you need. However the choice of ISPs probably won't be brilliant.

In the meantime it's as DTMark says, if you want the BT Vision service then it's either BT all the way or swap completely to Virgin Media's cable platform. As for BT's throttling, well so long as you pick their top broadband package then the effects are reduced but it's hard to avoid. Alternatively if you can get the superfast BT-Infinity (FTTC) service then that's ideal for their on-demand service and gaming.
