Annex M Estimated Speed

nip

Hey, I've switched to Plus.net for their AnnexM service.
My line will be transferred next week.

I'm 300m (straight line distance) from the exchange and my current line statistics are:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17789 Kbps 1020 Kbps
Line Attenuation 11.2 dB 1.4 dB
Noise Margin 5.3 dB 12.6 dB

Should I be expecting a good AnnexM connection, AKA will I reach the 2mb/s upload?

Also, how important is the router's role to achieve a maximum upload? I made some research and some people are getting like 400kbs extra from using a better router or different firmware.
Plus net sent me a technicolor tg582n, will this be satisfactory?

Regards,
Niki

Routers can make a BIG difference, back in my ADSLMax days I gained over 30% speed increase from switching from a Netgear to a TPLink router.

My works connection speed has just tripled, and we are still not sure if it is due to a new line or the new router EE finally supplied. (Went from 3.5Mb/256k to 9.5Mb/800k).

Thanks for the response. Any idea if the router they gave me is one of the better ones? If not, any better routers that come to mind? I will research into it myself as well :)

Not sure about router but the attenuation figures seem a bit off to me, normally the downstream is roughly twice what the upstream is, also with 11db down I would of thought you would get very close tot he 24meg max.

As Lee says, your stats look a bit odd but I'd be inclined to see if they settle a week after the new line has gone live and also keep an eye out for any unusual disconnections. It might be the case though that you could get even more speed, provided the cause of the odd stats can be located.

As for your router, I'm not sure what Captain was reading but the information seems to suggest that it supports ADSL2+ and ADSL2+M (G.992.5 Annex M) just fine. I would think that you should get 2Mbps+ upload but being Annex M you will of course lose some download to achieve that.

According to http://www.broadbandstuff.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=3026 that router is only good for 8Mb and doesnt support Annnex M.

I am not up on the best current ADSL routers, having gone fibre a few months back; however I have been VERY happy with the TP Link routers I replaced my Netgear rubbish with.

It does support AnnexM. I called up Plusnet multiple times to make sure the router supports it, and it's mentioned as a feature on it's manual/specifications page.

So according to my stats, I should be getting near the 24mb/s download? A week or so ago, I phoned up TalkTalk to ask them about AnnexM (they had no ******* clue what it was, even the manager...), and they did some tests on my line and managed to boost my download from 14mb/s to 15mb/s. That's pretty useless, but I would of thougth if my line stats are good, they should of being able to bump up my DL by a lot more right? So maybe the problem with my odd stats isn't the ISP?

What else could it be?

I cant see the stats changing they are directly related to the line length which wouldn't change.

It could be anything from your router, the line, your internal wiring, filters, port in the exchange external or internal REIN.

mmmmmm yes,

I went back and re-read it after a pint of coffee and realised I had only looked at its ADSL specs, not the ADSL2 bits.... sorry :o

The reviews I can find for it are decidedly "MEH"; it is a budget giveaway from the "Amstrad" of the router world, it will work, but I would get something better when you can afford it.

Buying one of the higher end routers with ADSL2+, 3G or 4G and EWAN support (for fibre) would be my suggestion, as this will future-proof you if you later go wireless internet or get the chance of fibre.

There are always "better" routers but yours should be fine for the task at hand.

My connection was just upgraded to AnnexM and here are my line statistics.

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 2,031 / 18,475

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/MB]: 8.41 / 70.72

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.3 / 0.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.7 / 13.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 5.9 / 3.1

On speedtest.net I get 15mb down (unchanged) and 1.6mb upload (was 0.8mb before).

Does this seem reasonable? I was expecting slightly higher upload 1.8-2.2mb.

My old line stats before switching to PlusNet:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 17789 Kbps 1020 Kbps
Line Attenuation 11.2 dB 1.4 dB
Noise Margin 5.3 dB 12.6 dB

I guess a better router as suggested earlier will give me a small speed boost?

Some chipsets are better than others at squeezing those last few kbps, but with those speeds already achieved, is it worth it??

You wont see a great deal of improvement (except possibly on the wifi side), until you get fibre.

I know Lee said he didn't expect to see the core line stats change but, as I've seen before, it's interesting to note that they have changed dramatically and attenuation now looks more sensible (not sure about that output power though but I've not had an Annex M line before.. so not sure how they behave).

As captain said, you won't see a big improvement by changing modem/router.
