Any networks that will let me...

I am working in a rural area at the moment and will be for the next year which has no phone line (and is no option), and I have recently purchased a laptop. I am hoping to try and hook my laptop up with a handset that will allow me to access the net.

I am wanting to know what handsets will allow me to do this and is there an ISP for that mobile I can use to access the internet on a cheap rate or even better a pay-monthly subscription dial-up 0800.

I'm aware most ISP's for mobiles call 0845 or 0870 numbers which are charged at normally 10p/40p per min. If anyone has any idea's to help me hook up to the net I would be very much appreciated. As no doubt I would be hooked up for long periods and obviously at 10p per min would be very expensive never mind 40p per min.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I used to do this when I was on the road.
I used a Nokia phone - it came with a data cable option and some software you installed onto your PC - then I used NDO's free 0845 service to dial-up with. Used to get 9.6k or 14.4k depending on signal strength. Its usable but not epically fast!

It cost normal 0845 rates which isnt too bad. And, it used to come out of my free minutes allocation too - although that was with Orange (they included 0845 as a number that came under the free allocation).

NDO used to have a "Businessdial" service which was £50 a year - sounds a lot, but there was an 0208 number you could use which was cheaper to call from a mobile. Depend how many hours you use really to balance out over the £50 cost for access to a geographic number. Unsure if they still do - check their website www.ndo.com to see!

You might also in a modern way be able to use one of these new PCMCIA GPRS cards you can get for laptops too - then you only pay for the volume of data you transfer - can be expensive but is faster than a dialup mobile connection...

- £178ish a lot for a card but is a fast GPRS always on conection on the move!

Good luck choosing.

I think Orange Virgin OVP still allows free 0800 calls... so you may be able to dial up at 9.6kbps... However browsing is EXTREMELY slow (Even when I use GPRS it takes about 2 minutes to load the ISPr Forum index :( )

Using a Mobile Handset is not really a viable option. You will pay at least £0.1 a minute. Speed will be low & reliability not good. Its ok for casual use but not the type of use you intend.

Orange OVP Virgin nolonger allow free 0800 - its now 5p/min.

However, there are certain ISPs who still have 01... and 02... numbers, which can be used within inclusive minutes - but check for a latest blacklist...
