Any service limitations (P to P) on the 150k and 250k Xtreme Solo residential ADSL?

Hi,

I'm interested in the 150k or 250k packages to replace my dialup connection, but I like to use file swapping software, such as Winmx and EMule, just wondering they might be blocked by Pipex on their budget offerings, the way Plusnet do. I notice newsgroup access isn't available as standard, and also saw somewhere on there site a message saying something like "not suitable for downloading mp3s", which seems alittle odd, considering I'm reasonably happy downloading mp3s on my dialup connection, which I thought SHOULD be slower. Anyone know if P to P gets blocked? I can't see it mentioned on the site or in the FAQ.

Also, anyone know if the 150k and 250k packages could actually be slower than 56k? I'm alittle worried they could be, after learning I could be sharing my maximum bandwidth with potientially 19 other people, and things like Emule seem to use 2-3k/s constantly, without any downloading taking place.

Thanks in advance

p.s. Anyone know how much extra newsgroup access is? Couldn't find that info either

Contention isn't really a problem in many places at the moment so i would imagion you'll find 150/256k much faster than your current 56k setup. I've not herd of Pipex blocking any ports at the moment, ovbiously you'll only be using P2P for swoping files that you are legaly able to :)

just to help you, my workplace has a 256k connection (leased line)

It is a lot better than dial up, and you would also get the benifits of adsl ie always on, phone+i net at same time etc.

I have heard that 150k packages are not that much different from dial up. But from my own experience 256k is a good step up from dial up.

Also p2p downloads in my experience depend on a lot of thing other than your connection speed, so you could still get download speeds similar to what you see now. I do and ive got 512k.

I think the wording about "not suitable for downloading mp3s" is trying to make you go for a faster/more expensive package!

Also if your interested 256k can be ok for on line gaming, if you pick your servers carefully.

hope this helps.

I'd also imagion that they suggest "not for mp3 downloading" as if its capped it'll eat into your monthly allocation quite quickly and also who wnats to download mp3's at 20-20kb/s when for a few £ extra a month it can be 50-65. I agree with Monkey its probably to make people who wnat to download a fair bit go for a higher package, as most people who download mp3's won't jkust download 1 or 2 they'll want to download album after album. I shudder everytime my itunes bill arrives.

I Didn't know PN blocked ports. I have looked on the website and couldn't find any referal to this. Could you point out where you have seen this? I recommend PN to a lot of people and wont if this is the case.
