Any VoIP Wifi phone recommendations?

Hello everyone

I don't even know if this is an actual thing but is there any physical handsets you can buy where you just put in SIP details, charge it (preferably via USB-C) and then just leave it connected to the wifi? Not connected to any base station or whatever? A base station wouldnt' be the end of the world I guess if much cheaper.

Any recommendations for this?

Thank you

An example of a IP phone to WIFI would be a Grandstream WP820

Generally they are twice the price of an equivalent DECT handset but you don't need the base. The DECT specification provides a better network connection than WIFI which is why it is more common.

SO are you looking for brand new and recent tech solution then, or you don't mind second-hand and a bit older tech but cheaper?

I'm abit weary of second hand especially when it comes to this type of stuff. For example I see that WP820 is £100 brand new but people are selling it second hand on Ebay for £20. What's the chances people have modified the handset to get details sent to them? It seems too cheap.

An interesting thought, but how would they do that as when you receive you can then wipe it to factory setting, also you can then say that about anything that connects to the internet, from second-hand phones to laptops.

Have you got the link for that one (on Ebay for £20).

It's cheap because not everyone is into VOIP handsets as you can use VOIP apps on mobile phones but if you don't mind the £80 different brand new, then go for brand new then.

I have this and have been using them (I have 2) for years with my Sipgate accounts and it works okay for me -

INCOM ICW-1000

Also the battery on it is replaceable too, about £15 on eBay.

And generally longer battery life too. But it's a long time since I looked into wifi SIP handsets.

DECT will almost certainly work better unless you've already covered a large area with multiple wifi hotspots and want to roam around that. But even then, I'd be looking at a mobile phone softphone instead.

I’ve been using the same BT DECT handsets and a Linksys PAP2T for well over a decade now. They have always worked reliably for me.

Avoid getting a PAP2T! They have been discontinued for the best part of 12 years. You will find loads on eBay, but these are cheap Chinese clones. Anyone gets hold of your SIP credentials, and you risk getting a huge bill from your ITSP.
