Anyone care to help a router numpty?

Finally switched out my old USB modem for a router at the weekend. Works fine on the base station via ethernet cable, but all I can get wireless on a laptop is access to the router and an icon bottom right that says local intranet. Try to connect to he internet and just get message '400; bad request; bad file name'

Anyone care to advise me what I need to do to sort this and get the wireless working. Thanks

Router info could be useful, like what make, model, etc.
Configuring firewalls would be the next step. At a guess.
I doubt too many people round here are that psychic to solve your probs without basic information. But you're a Pisces, aren't you?

Just to clarify, when you connect the Ethernet cable to your laptop the Internet access works fine but when you disconnect that and try Wireless it doesn't? We'll need to know more about your router and even the laptop to help though.

Otherwise if you're trying to disconnect the Ethernet LAN and connect a Wi-Fi WLAN right away then that could cause a conflict with the Internet connection, which may require the connection to be setup as a bridge (personally I'd avoid this). Generally you should either use Wi-Fi or an Ethernet cable but not both, so did you reset the computer after disconnecting the Ethernet cable before trying WLAN?

Judging by your remarks the WLAN part of your connection works otherwise you wouldn't be able to access the router with an IP through the browser. I don't know your router so it's hard to advise but I wouldn't be surprised if you needed to enter your ISP's primary and secondary DNS into the WLAN's IP profile manually.

I do it that way myself because the auto-detection routine won't always work. Oh and what OS are you running? Please don't say Vista :) .

No, a Gemini. Thanks for your replies.

It's a Dynamode R-ADSL-C4W-EG.

Using XP. Router firewall turned off, Windows firewall off but use Zone Alarm.

The ethernet cable is connected to my desktop and this works fine. Trying to connect wireless from another machine - a laptop - using the supplied dongle doesn't. Connects to router but no internet access.

do a tracert to bbc.co.uk and post the result, this will rule out what type of traffic you are able to get through, it is more than likely DNS like Mark said.

EDIT:

Also try doing "telnet ispreview.co.uk 80" and see if it gives you a load of text

it may seem simple but is wireless switched on. my netgear router came with wireless switched off had to conect with lan and go into router setup and switch wireless on and then reconfigure both router and adaptor

Wish my wireless came "off" by default, the bugger keeps switching itself on; I ended up setting it up even though I dont use it, just to keep it secure as it sets itself up by default with no protection at all !!!!!!!
