for some weird reason google decided to stop working (originally l thought it was all http) but after trying a few sites l noticed it was just google up till l tried the access the sky service status page which also seemed immediately timeout immediately.

tho in the past min or two its seemed to clear.. it was very strange because skype/irc stayed connected.. not sure if it had anything to do with the https everywhere addon as things started to work after disabling it.. but it was 10mins till l could access everything that seemed to be inaccessable (namely sky service status and google, didnt get round to testing much else tho only sky tv seems to be noting issues at the moment).

by sky fibre l mean sky fibre.. or fibre optic. my connection doesnt use DSL unless you consider it uses VDSL between me and a cab within 600m or so but its all fibre to the cabinet.

Not had any such problems here.

actually if you read how fibre optic broadband is deployed, the fibre goes to a local box and the last 600m is served by VDSL, so yes a sort of DSL is used but essentially the connection is fibre based.. only 600m of copper doesnt really make my connection DSL imho in fact BT term it as FTTC.

@mark

tbh it was after midnight and l guess most ppl actually sleep at night lol, thankfully tho things have been fine since but it was strange as my tablet seemed fine online (a christmas present l bought for myself, spent most if the period by myself so l kept myself busy in time for the sales to start lol), then again by the time l tested the tablet and my laptop things started to work again so l couldnt tell you if it was just my pc or the connection, either way it was strange because only http traffic seemed to have the problem as skype and the irc server l manage stayed connected with no problems whatsoever..

VDSL is dsl.. it isnt fibre. its copper.

You need to check up on VDSL again Fibre is pulled to the cabinet then from thnere it goes over copper or what ever the line is to the house.

VM doesn't pull fibre to your home either it is fibre to the cabinet then coax to the home so copper.

Most big network operators tend to leave any network maintenance or updates until out-of-hours times, so you're arguably more likely to notice such hitches in connectivity at around mid-night and the early hours. Perhaps that was the reason.

its entirely possible, things were starting to work again the moment l tried on the tablet.. tho l think it was most noticeable on sites using https, the first sites l got to open were not using any type of encryption.

Almost all service affecting work will be done between midnight and 6am and that's by all providers.

thats my point.. it isnt fibre. if you are looking at it in a way which the OP is, you could call 3G fibre aswell as ADSL2+

FTTC is quite simply fibre optic to a cabinet. and the rest is copper.

a fibre connection would terminate at the house not a box possibly miles away.. VDSL is much the same as ADSL2+ but faster over short distances. Regarding virgin media we all know it isnt fibre as RevK has proven time and time again. however the quality of the cable is better and you always get the speed (actual sync not throughput)

we could sit here all day arguing semantics lol and l know its open to interpretation, however one could say the same if fibre came to the house but used copper internal lining to get the service to the modem... and to be honest, what we base our facts on is BTs terminology, lm pretty sure lve never heard BT use the term VDSL on their ads tho they love using the word fibre optic..

BTO itself don't really call it fibre (BT Retail does though)

My main problem with calling it fibre is the fact real people selling fibre are at a disadvantage (i.e those selling copper can call the service fibre but fibre providers have to do the same in calling it fibre). I myself have had fibre in the past and the difference is huge, pings are less, more reliability etc.
