Anyone up for a challenge ?

Hi everyone,

I won't go into great detail here but, At the moment I am with AOhelL as my ISP. I got a phone call from them about a week or so ago to go onto their "Long time Member" plan. So, I went from £19.99 down to £17.99, Only problem is, since then I have started to be throttled from 4PM until around 5am :hrmph:

As of that, I am thinking of moving to another ISP (I told Aol to move me back onto a rolling contract at the moment).

Here's the hard part...
I live in a small village that basically has nothing
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/WMPKR
(Sam knows is incorrect I believe as, as far as I know, There are no LLU services either)

And I am after:
  • 8Mb (Up)or so Broadband
  • A company with good customer service
  • Unlimited Usage (Because I use a lot of data, Im guessing 100GB may get me past a month if im lucky (Edit: Well, What is reasonable? I don't want to end up paying alot more if I go over a limit)
  • No throttling / port shaping
  • No rubbish

And for under £25 a month (or as close as possible)

Possible? I don't know, thats why I came here :P
(If I could, I would set up my own ISP, but I think I wouldn't get much out of it :/ )

Details -
My max speed at the moment is around 6.5MB at mid-day
My worst speed is around 0.4MB between 6PM - 10 PM everyday
A 3 min youtube video can take up 30 mins to load :0
My line's profile speed is set at 6500 kbps (Or something close to that)

Well, Anyone want to accept that challenge ?

Prize - A virtual cookie

Thanks,
Tavis

Hehe well good luck getting all of that from BT based ISPs, though PlusNet might come close but they do make use of traffic management. The big problem is that most of the so-called "unlimited" services come from cheaper unbundled and cable broadband products, BT's platform is a lot more expensive so you're unlikely to get what you want for that price point.

Check out some of the better quality ISPs like Fast.co.uk, IDNet, Zen and ICUK to see what I mean. Entanet vISPs like ADSL24 offer some good usage allowances but right now I still see a lot of complaints about service quality from those.

Hi Travis,

Have you considered a package with a Fair Usage Policy?

Our Business Bronze package will cost under 25 pounds, but it does come with a 'FUP' of 20GB. If this is hit you are only throttled back to a 1 meg speed. There are no extra charges.

This idea obviously does depend on how much of a difference a 1 meg connection would make to you :)

In case you're interested, further details can be found here.

Hi Andy,

I'll look into that plan that you have mentioned. I mean, I seem to be getting 1mb -2mb at the moment (On average) and I'm living with it.

I just need to monitor how much I use today (I'm going to really bash my connection) and see how much I use up :)

Thanks

(Edit : I can't seem to find the plan you mentioned, Well, I can find the Bronze Business plan, But nothing about the FUP )

Edit 2 : Moving my budget to £28 incl. VAT (Not Big jump, But it may help)

Be careful with Orange, they haven't had a lot of problems with lost customers for nothing.

Thanks Butler. Apparently I can get 7mbps with Orange. It's ashame though, All I hear about them is bad news around here :crap:

I can get faster 3G internet over my mobile in my house than over the land line. Now that is saying something:eek:

I've worked it out that I can use anywhere from 548MB to 1.2GB per day :/
Usually it is the smaller figure, but it depends on how big game updates are.

Double post inbound...

Hi everyone,

I'm still having no luck with AOL. They have recently sent an openworld engineer around who refitted our master socket, and then refitted the majority of the cable from the house to the post. (Something was corroded)

Anyways, The engineer said that everything was fine, and that on his laptop he could achieve a 7.6MB download speed (Using a BT voyager 105 USB modem).

I then in excitement when to check the speed after he had left. I was down to a heartbreaking 0.4mb :crap:

So, I asked AOL to reset my ip-profile. Which they did, My router now syncs at 7616kbps and I have an ip-profile of 6500.

I was happily chugging along at those speeds until it suddenly started to slow down again.

Over the past day or two, It has gone back to how it was. I am getting a poor download speed (800kbps to 1200kbps) during non-peak hours too.

Now this is where it get's interesting. When I renewed the contract with AOL, The woman in customer services (Level 2) told me that I would get a MINIMUM of 5.5Mb's download speed. If not, I could cancel at any time.

Well, Seeing as I am getting less than that, I may take that offer up ASAP, But I'm thinking it won't be that easy.

Anyways, These are the alternatives I am looking at....

aquiss.net - Gaming 30 - £24.99
naims.co.uk - 30GB/Unlimited - £19.36
icuk - Option 3 (20GB/100GB) - £25
ADSL24 - Home 30 or Home 60 (Dependant on what I can afford at the time) - £19.20 - £29.20

Does anyone mind rating them for me ?
(The sooner the better)
To be honest - I am leaning towards ADSL24 for some reason.

Thanks

Code:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 1557 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
 Additional Information:
 Your DSL Connection Rate :7616 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 6500 Kbps

ICUK and Aquiss are good but I'd be careful of ICUK because they do have a traffic management policy and I am unsure if it will impact gaming on their platform. You might also want to check out Xilo, both of which recently ramped up their usage allowances. Well I haven't checked Xilo's site to see if it's been updated yet but they did report this last week:

Thanks Mark.
Xilo seems to be a bit nicer price wise now, but if the data usage applies 24/7 then i'm afraid that's no good to me anymore :crap:

I'm still leaning towards ADSL24 or Aquiss.

Hmm. I wonder if I could pay to get the exchange llu'd. :P (I think that would be over my budget)

XILO Home packages are off-peak (unmetered) from midnight to 8am. The Office packages are off-peak 8pm to 8am.

Hi Kansenji,

Thanks for your reply.
I'm guessing you haven't heard that I moved to xilo about a month ago and I am extremely happy withe their service.

Thanks for the info though, taking that in, I may move to an office package soon.

By the way, Can any mods/admins lock this thread - I don't find it necessary anymore as I've found a new ISP.

Thanks,
Tavis

I'm glad to hear you are happy; so am I. I moved to XILO from AAISP on 22nd March 2010. AAISP were excellent, though XILO are even more . . er . . EXCELLENT!

PS. if you are getting unwanted emails about this thread, just select "No email notification" under "Thread Subscription" at the bottom of this page. ;)

Too true, Xilo are amazing :)

Nice to see your enjoying XILO.

I'm just waiting for TalkTalk LLU so I can snatch up that Pro 24 plan :D

I get a 40ms over powerline, that's saying something. On ethernet (laptop) I can get a 30ms ping, at times as low as 26ms.

The "perfect" ISP!

Well, if this thread is giving you no hassle, I can't see any point in "locking" it. If it no longer has a use, it will effectively "lock" itself because people will stop posting on it; though I have no control over such things.

It seems that XILO is being re-branded as unobroadband; let's hope that nothing else changes & it remains the "perfect" ISP for a very long time. :)

Hi Tavis,

if you go to our website and do an availability search for our LLU product, when it comes back without success you can get our unlimited BT package for £24.78 + VAT, we only offer that pricing to people who are in very strange areas.
www.smithmediagroup.co.uk

We also have 24/7 technical support in case you ever need it.

Hope this helps

Clive
