Anything better than Plusnet

I'm with Plusnet, I just use Hotmail, never had a problem with their service centre, only used it once tho' I got through in one minute, got my answer from a nice friendly guy...sorted.

They aint perfect, but are reliable and there are a lot worse out there.

Better the devil you know.

If you dont like the email addy (and virtually all isp's own mail has their name in it) why dont you get your own domain name and then you have virtually unlimited email addy's ?

I'd agree thats prob the best bet, at least if you move ISP's you can keep the same email address then as well.

There is ofcourse GMAIL as well, been using it for about 6 months now and no probs to date.

Gmail also gives you free pop3 which is handy if you find the labels instead of folders annoying. Hotmail used to charge for pop3 don't know if they still do though... By far the best approach is to get your own domain, you should never have your website or email tied to your choice of isp.

123-reg offer a good email solutioin for your doamin if you buy it through them. I find them the cheapest for renewing domains aswell.

Hi tommymcg

You are not alone.

Whe I first migrated to plusnet from AOL, I found their speed and customer support to be very good. That was a year ago!!!

Upgraded to 2Mb and still OK

For the last five month have found their customer support to be useless ( don't even bother to telephone as you will have to wait a long time) and their speed to be slow.

Complained of slow speed because I was getting BT speed test results as low as 192Kb sometimes ( virtually unable to connect) always during the day and because of this they initially refused to do anything about it saying that BT would only say that it was a contention issue if the speeds were OK out of peak times.

Complained again just recently and all of a sudden they decided to get BT wholesale to investigate. BT say there is nothing wrong but since Monday the speed seem to be good and fairly constant but it is ""early days""

As far as their customer support is concerned, not impressed at all. Asked why they were able to have me connected at 2Mb when the speed test on the BT Wholesale site and two or three other ISP's say that the line is only capable of speeds up to 1Mb.

They ingnored the question ( as with other questions I put to them on their Ticket System) for a while and when I pressed harder for an explaination they said they did not know and point blank refused to get the info from BT Wholesale.

I wonder why????

In the absence of any plausible explaination from them, I am left to think that the speed problem was one of their making and not BT Wholesale's.

I could go on but not worth raising my blood pressure.

yes but that is probably using IMAP rather than POP3

It probably is, I really and honestly wouldn't know, but it works, and it is reliable.

Does it make any difference ?.. I only use it 'cos it's free and I can take it with me if I leave my ISP.

I would love to know....

I don't think there is anyone better

Hi,

A large number of my clients have used the following ISPs (not necessarily at my recommendations)-
Eclipse
Wanadoo / Freeserve
BTopenworld / BTinternet / BTclick etc etc
Nildram
AOL
Virgin
Tiscali
Macace (reseller now run by someone else)
amongst others.

None of the above touch Plus
I used to say Eclipse were good but having just spent 25mins on the phone to them as a result of the domain hosting being unreliable I can't say they are any better.

Plus are the god of ISPs. I find it hard to stop thanking their call centre staff and praising their service. They even will set up PTR to what ever you want assuming you can control your A records. Very, very, very few ISPs will go to that extreme.

An odd problem a mate has. Just joined with plusnet, and hes on 1mb. Now he went for the 2mb package, and yet plusnet are telling him its £15 to regrade. Now it could be that his line cant take 2MB, but thats very unlikely.

Well they upgraded mine from 512 to 2 for free, but that was a while ago.

I'm probably not up to date, so I'd query it in case, but I think the situation is ...

*Existing* customers got a free upgrade provided that they were happy to wait for BT to get around to doing their exchange - if they wanted to jump the queue, they paid for it.
*New* customers, i.e. those who haven't had broadband before, get put on the best that their line will take - no extra expense if this is 2Mb rather than 512k or 1Mb.
*Migrating* customers, though, do, I believe, have to pay that £15 fee if they also upgrade the speed when they migrate.

Yup, hes just moved house, so new line, and he selected the right package.

Only at 1MB, so he asked them about 2MB (as hes pretty sure he can get it there). They said it would cost £15 for a regrade, so either they put him on the wrong package first of all, or the line couldnt take 2MB and they havent remembered when asked about 2MB.

I've recently had my PlusNet Plus package activated and so far so good. I am not a heavy downloader and do not use p2p. Connection speed (evenings) is 1.9 Mb/ps.
I have contacted support and sales staff by phone and have never waited more than 10mins AND I always speak to UK based staff. I have also used their contact ticket system and get replies within 48hrs often much earlier.
So far so good and I would recommend their plus package to light users. At £14.99 it is excellent value.
