Anytime dialup trouble takes 3 to 6 times to connect

hi,
When i try to connect to wanadoo it can take about 2 to 6 times and when it dials u sometimes there is nothing after its dialed into wanadoo but just quite and no noise from servers. Im on ISDN and usualy connects in about 5 seconds but sometimes its doing nothing for 20 seconds so then i know its not connecting and theres no response from servers.

Ive checked someones elses dialup as they on 56k modem and thats how i found out what happening and also dialed the number from normal phone and same nothing there not a bleep nothing.

This has started happening since they changed from Freeserve to Wanadoo.

Anyone having same trouble as ive complained to tech support about it and they say the servers are fine and keep saying its BT fault ( typical wanandoo excuse at moment ) no way i phoning BT asking them to check line and exchange and find out its not that and get £51 charge.

Im thinking quiting Wanadoo and finding another isp until Broadband comes available when the new 10km extended reach comes out and then im not using wanadoo as they are basically going down hill what ive read.

Can anyone tell me another good isp just for temporary until Broadband comes available as i dont want to get tied into a 12 month contract with some ISP's

I've not used Freeserve (AKA Wanadoo) for years, and even then it was only on their Pay As You Go service; but back then it was fine. I've not much love for any ISP, less for Wanadoo now (because they're French!), but maybe it is a BT fault - afterall you're not hearing an engaged tone which you might expect if it was a Wanadoo problem.

If you're looking for another ISP, I personally use V21 and would recommend them to anyone. You can sign-up online at www.v21.co.uk, and can get the first month for £1 on their Standard package at the moment. They don't operate with any annual contracts, so if you don't like them you can always cancel straight away and go elsewhere.

it dials into wanadoo ok but its there where problem is the servers dont send anything back as though to modem to say its ready to connect

This is exactly the same problem I had. Whilst Freeserve were running things, I connected on ISDN straight away, almost never got an engaged signal and auto redials at night worked just fine.

Once Wanadon't took over things went downhill just as you describe. Difficulty connecting, random disconnects and sometimes the modem just seemed to hang in empty telecoms space, unable to connect to anything.

After a week of this nonsense I quit the service (after three years or more as a Freeserve customer) and am using AOL now. No scheduled disconnects and redialling works fine most of the time. There are a few other problems, but at least I can walk away from the PC and expect it to still be working away when I come back.

Wanadon't may blame BT for this, but it seems suspicious that everything was working fine under Freeserves management and then went haywire when they took over. I suspect I won't be the last customer of theirs that switches ISP.

Is your modem sending out lots of data, and not getting anything back then? If this is the case, your problem may be Ad-Ware related - try running Ad-Aware (free from www.ad-aware.com) to see whether this helps. Alternatively, it could be a virus (such as Netsky) - run a good virus killer like Norton and see if anything's found.

But you state above when number is dialed on your line, nothing.... this is a BT fault as its not even attempting to dial the number.

Wanadoo never "took over" - Freeserve has been part of the Wanadoo Group since 2001, its just this year they decided to take on their parent's brand.

So its the same systems, same management. People who say "it all went bad when wanadoo took over" clearly cannot understand there is no new management, just a name change, and as such are using it as an excuse to blame the ISP in THIS situation.

But how much do you know about wannado's workings? Its very possible they instigated changes along with the name change, as many companies have been known to do.

Maybe they have, maybe they havent. Just seems to me a bit of a coincidence that we are having bit of a surge in wannado problems recently.

A lot - but it is obvious from what Wanadoo/Freeserve have said and what they did say that it is not anyone taking over, and it IS just a rebrand.

Hows that then? As I said, many places get a revamp of working methods, pay, maybe staff changes, etc etc.

Only someone very highup in wannado would know if there has been changes made or not. Fact is, there has been a lot more complaints since the rebranding.

Anyway, Im not going to argue this point. Im sure you will disagree till your blue in the face. Its obvious to me that something must have changed for all these new complaints to come in, and wannado have actually gotten to the complaints page. Can you remember the last time that happened?

hi,
Ive picked up 2 different ISP disks today and im thinking going AOL or Tiscali as they both offer free trial and quiting wanadoo, ive been with them for years and no problems until a few month back and there servers acted up and blamed BT ( like now ) and i had enginneer out and cost me £51 cost and about £10 tech support costs. NO way im doing that again.

It dials number and thats all, the line is quite and nothing there not a bleep or signal.

So looking like its not me and a few others with same problem and exactly sametime they changed name looks like they changed something else too and not told us.

If wanadoo reading this as i know some ISP's do WE want a statement on this and tell us no bull about its BT fault and look into it as im going to quit Wanadoo and try AOL for 2 months until i can get ADSL with the new 10km one :)

tried AOL and it was better then wanadoo infact loads better but got into a problem and that they dont support networking of 2 computers :(

It kept disconnecting network when i dialed up :(

Phoned support it was free number better then 50p a minute with wanadoo.

If AOL supported networking i would used them instead but goto wait until broadband before i can use them now.

Anyone know of a ISP that no limit to usage a month and also support networking of 2 pc's ?

Again I'd recommend V21 - although they don't offer technical support for networking without a router, you can do it on their service very easily using the Internet Connection Sharing facility built into Windows XP.

YESSSSSSSS New ADSL 512k limits scrapped

I should be able to get ADSL from 6th September so going to put up with Wanado ( crap ) until ADSL is installed.

Now problem is finding a ISP with no activation charge, free ISDN to normal phone line switch and also no cap limit's

So far been a Headache going through them all

At mo im Stuck between BT Yahoo as they offer all 3 :)
AOL - they offer free modem and activation and no cap limit and only £24.99
Freedom2surf - Free Activation and only £23 a month and only 1 month contracts :)

Anyone know of any with free ISDN to ADSL convertion charge and free activation ?

Try a different number for Wanadoo.

1470 0808 9916080 or
1470 0808 9916163 or
1470 0808 9916164.

I have no trouble whatsoever with them

As an afterthought, I have 2 computers and can connect immediately with t'other as soon as I disconnect from this one.

Err, BT?

BT have one of the most useless customer support I have ever encountered.

Add to that, they have caps on all their services, very tight ones too.

And, if you choose the BT ones without caps, its a very expensive monthly charge. After a year you would soon get back an activation charge if you went with a lower cost ISP.

As for free ISDN conversion, I think its only BT that does it (due to them being in a much better position than other ISP's to do it).

All I can say is, beware year long contracts and always check out a lot of customer feedback before you go with an ISP. The compare graphs on ADSL guide is a very useful feature.

I think BT charge you directly on your phone bill when you ask your ISP to place an ADSL conversion order. When I had this done on my line it cost me about £40, which was added to my phone bill.

Of course my line rental dropped from around £90 per quarter to £30 per quarter, sobeing charged £40 wasn't really a problem, and I've earnt that back tenfold in savings since going to a standard telephone line :D

Hi Guys

Maybe I shouldnt point this out but I work for wanadoo, and theres been no changes to the service apart from broadband tariffs, and then this week the implementation of new pay as u go 0844 numbers, instead of 0845. Theres been no changes to anytime apart from new numbers at the beginning of the year. the service of wanadoo is run in britain, call centres ect apart from some technical support in india, but there is still tech in the uk too. so its just owned by france telecom. we still run it. www.wanadoo.co.uk/help can be useful, customer support can only give htis information theyre not insured to deal with tech issues in case they break ure pc, so tech support is the most likely way to go if this doesnt help, an 0870 number is available to customers who cant dial 0906 numbers but you would need a passcode only available from custmer care.

oh and wireless bb is available where you can connect up to 6 PC's to the connection wirelessly within a radius of 15 meters i think , if u need to use more than 1 pc. this is available for £80 free modem and connex http://www.wanadoo.co.uk/time/bb_wire1.htm?bbType=wifi

It seems that more than one of us is having this problems with Freeserve\Wanadoo.

I've been having this failure to connect to Wanadoo for the past 5 days, you dail 5-6 times with failure to connect to Wanadoo's line number. then say on the 6th attempt you get through.

Im just wondering if wanadoo is switching more of its telephone connection lines from Dialup to Broadband..!! As it seems to me that as they push Broadband more and more their dailup services get worse. It could just be me but is suspiciously close to be a co-incidence??

Currently im considering changing my ISP as Freeserve\Wanadoo is really getting on my nerves and thats my polite way of saying it if i say what i really think of Wanadoo at the moment i would get banned for using 4 letter expletives
