AOL / Talk Talk

Since the move of the AOL servers to the Talk Talk servers their Broadbadnd service has been very bad.

Last week the broadband went down for more than 3 hours and also since the move you are unable to view alot of websites using Firefox or IE and all AOL are advising is that you need to clear your Internet History / Cookies and check your MTU size.

Today I manged to get a reply from them saying that they are aware of hte problem and it should be fixed in the next 24 hours but this problem has been going on alot longers then that and have spoken to alot of AOL Customers who are havint the same problem as this and are also veru unhappy with this.

Have you tried using OpenDNS in place of AOLs own DNS settings? It may help with website access:

http://www.opendns.org

Otherwise by "very bad" do you mean it's gotten a lot slower? If so, what package are you on as I know that quite a few people with a 1Mbps connection have recently been complaining that AOL will now only give them 512Kbps.

I hope this doesn't sound too obvious, but why not just leave? I wouldn't tolerate that dreadful service, at any price.

yeh im thinking of that just have to purswade the bill payers lol

also tried to get on to the opendns site but couldnt even get the start page loaded!!! not even on the AOL software looks like opendns having probs or aol blocking them id go for the second one lol

I happened to look on the AOL forum over on ADSLguide yesterday to see how things were going since I deserted.

It seems AOL customers that have been moved to the CPW (talktalk) network have been unable to access a number of sites via CPW's network (not even pingable), unless they use AOL's software (which uses a proxy - but not uk.proxy.aol.com for CPW customers). EDIT their software also uses a different login realm/ISP domain...

That problem is also compounded by CPW's network having a lower MTU than AOL's network so AOL customers will also have problems accessing some other sites (probably Ebay's https login, Hotmail,Messenger etc) unless they reduce their MTU and apparently weren't notified about it.

AOL's network supported an MTU of up to 1450 and this would be correctly negotiated when the Netgear router they supply connected, so it didn't actually matter if their customers didn't set it up (which was just as well, because changing the adsl settings in the Netgear router while using PPPoE causes its MTU setting to revert to 1492) Unfortunately it seems CPW only support an MTU of up to about 1400 and this has to be set either on their router or PC.

I think this thread covers the issues :- http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=aol&Number=3275825&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1

its funny you say 1400 as MTU as AOL now recomend it to be set to 1500 but still having the same problems accessing websites via IE and Firefox, and so much for AOL saying it will be fixed in 24 hours as it still aint!

Well some AOL customers on CPW's network have had to reduce the MTU to get some sites working, however the latest problem sites are a different issue.

If you have your router's MTU set to 1500, then you can check it is not too large by opening a console (start menu-> run and type in cmd)

and enter the following ping command (the parameter before the 1472 is a lowercase L not an i by the way)

ping ispreview.co.uk -f -l 1472

If you get an error similar to "packet needs to be fragmented, but do not fragment is set", or a timeout error, then a 1500 MTU is too large or the MTU setting on your PC or router is already less less than 1500. (to test if a 1430 MTU is small enough "ping ispreview.co.uk -f -l 1402" and if that's still to large to try 1400 "ping ispreview.co.uk -f -l 1372")

Can you access the following sites with AOL's software, but not IE/firefox?

http://www.thinkbroadband.com
http://www.youtube.com
http://www.firebox.com/
http://www.v8thunderonline.com/index.php

If so as a temporary workaround you could try to identify CPW's proxy and try it with Firefox and IE.

you can add a few other sistes as well to that which I own and my website hosting company site!

Could be a good idea just how to get hold of them lol

Well when I was with AOL, I identified the AOL proxy by using wireshark www.wireshark.org (as I had it installed anyway) to capture my network traffic while running the AOL software. I guess as an alternative you could open a webpage in AOL's software and try "netstat -a" in the console and look for a URL that might be a proxy.

The AOL proxy was: uk.proxy.aol.com port 80 for http: port 443: for https: , but I gather that particular proxy doesn't work once you've been transfered to the CPW/TalkTalk network.

ok im talking to AOL/TalkTalk just now again

This is all what they said to me (just the same as yesterday)

Have just spoken to BBC Watchdog on the phone after getting a call back from them from the email I sent them!

Bascily they are very intrested in the problems we have been having after AOL moved the Servers to TalkTalk Servers.

They have allready had quite a few people contacting them regarding the issues and heave also been reading about them on digitalspy.

I expleined about the downtime and not being able to access an number of websites (not only youtube).

They then said if we keep an eye on the problems and if we find they are still having problems etc to get back intouch with them durring the week and they may do a report on next weeks show!

But he did say that it sounds like it may just be ironing out stuff with the move to the servers. I did say that as paying customers they should be ironed out before we do move.

So will see if you do find any other sites over the week place them on the board so I can keep an eye on them and then get back in touch with Watchdog durring the week :)

I just wonder how many customers AOL are losing since the server changeover, I am on 2mb service and that has to be a lie more like 600k.
Everything was fine, I was getting 2MB untill the changeover and my service has gone downhill ever since.

My contract ran out last week and today I asked for my MAC code, I need to move on to pastures new.

The problem is I do not know who do go with.

AOL Time Warner couldn't make money out of their ISP despite all the film and music stuff they had direct access to. That sounds like totally dead wood in management, to me.

So why did Careless Warehouse by into the AOL customer base? They are in the business of selling phone lines. How many AOLers are going to move into their slime?

I wish I could make up my mind what to do about things. I can't see things getting superfine with CPW any time soon. They aren't going to make ISP-ing pay are they? And invest even more?

Would you?

They seem to be steering well clear of this place at any rate. Several other providors have reps on here. FWTW, it might be a place to start looking.
