Area Going Live Soon (SO19 - Sholing) - Having Doubts

So while I was making my cuppa tea, i had a knock on the door, answered, turns out to be toob! saying my area will be going live in about a months time! exciting times! as on three 5G broadband currently! i will be jumping ship to them, as 5G is up and down like a yoyo recently, and a stable connection is ideal when i am gaming.. and uploading at times..

Mean purpose of this thread:

1) Install picture/installation dates etc
2) Router specs/how it handles connection day to day
3) Overall service provided review

Hi Ash, I am just up the road in Hightown and I was out when the marketing team knocked recently, but they did leave a coming soon leaflet. I called customer services to ask when the area would be going live, I was told by end of March 2023 it is planned to go live.

Have heard the router is not great, so I will be replacing it with something better.

I remember that pain. I had email notification set up with them but would religiously check the website constantly just in case their email hadn't got through. Then I'd be checking street poles near me to see if any had toob connections attached, that kind if thing, it was torturous really thinking about it. I'm so glad it's not something I have to think about any more

Haha the wait sends us all crazy. I was walking the dog at lunchtime and I did see a hi viz man in the green street cabinets, he was from QST ( https://www.qstltd.co.uk/) which are one of Toob’s contractors, it looked like he was counting up the cable bundles and then counting the number of houses, whilst crunching on his IPad, I should have asked him how much longer but the dog wanted his walk.

Hopefully some final QA checks before going live.

Closets green cab to me is around the corner from me (Coates Road) two of them next to each other, they were put in not long ago, I'd say least 2/3 months ago top of head, I wish they would be more spot on with time going live, i been waiting like mad, as using mobile to tether currently, as can't get fttc/fttp with bt, only adsl+2 at 15meg, inpossible to game on when someone is always watching netflix or amazon prime or youtube, did have virgin media about 2 years ago but ended contract with out fee as they couldn't fix a fault on the service that was happening months on end, and was using three 5g home broadband for about 8/9 months till disconnections issues constantly got out of that too last month lol. though using smarty (threee) some reason hasn't been as bad when i was on three for some reason, part from three say there is a mast issue (?)

I have 3 cabinets near my house, they are on Barrow Down Gardens, they were put in back on one Saturday in September, the closest one is literally outside my house ( not that distance is an issue with Fibre).

We have a g.fast BT PCP on Barrow Down Gardens so 300 down and 50 up but it’s expensive (£64 per month), there is also a FTTC cab opposite the PCP but 80mb sucks when you have been on 300.

5G operates on a higher frequency and it is badly affected by objects blocking line of sight, you might find 4G / 4G+ performance is better as the frequency has better range . Until they put up more 5G masts to solve the coverage issue it will continue to be rubbish.

900 symmetrical is going to be like night and day for you, fingers crossed it’s just a few weeks away.

Update: The QST contractors were back today, they had a compressor and were blowing air through the fibre tubes they had previously installed in November, he went to every Openreach cable pit/manhole in the cul de sac, I asked one of the lads who was at the Green Cabinet, how long until it’s live, he said he didn’t know but said it must be soon as this is the last thing they do.

The wait continues…..

That’s a good sign hopefully it’s our whole area going live as a block, they were not here long either maybe 10 minutes max.

It can’t be far away now, hopefully some announcements soon from Toob, they have been quiet for a while on social media.

Oooh this sound promising for us too in Gosport.
As we had the QST guys on a road next to ours blowing through a few weeks back.
Did wonder what their van name meant.
They were only there for half hour or so.

I have been on toob for 9 months now; a good 900Mbps download and upload on ethernet. I can count the number of outages on the fingers of one hand and most were pre-planned work. I don't use toob's router and I have a mesh wifi system to cover a larger house and garden.
Is CGNAT an issue for you with gaming?
I am very happy with toob

I'm not a gamer.
Did wonder about cg-nat a while ago, as I had my own home ip camera cctv setup running via a server on one pc.
The Toob £8 a month for a static ip is rather steep.
But I have since changed those ip cameras connecting via the dlink supplied internet server/app and works fine. So no more port forwarding...

As for a mesh, have for a good while now have used the sr203 sky router and found the mesh it creates between the main sky Q box and mini fills all the gaps on the extremes of the house. Mind the wifi in my Victorian house has never really caused any problems, plus also get good wifi signal way down my long back garden.
My two sky q boxes are both ethernet, so the wifi hotspot they put out is a good little extra bonus. As Sky allow you to do that also with 3rd party routers (I know someone on Toob in Soton that has done it) it will still offer that little extra to those extremes in the house.

My router is positioned centre of my house and is five feet above the floor, so well positioned for creating a good wifi.
As I said get a good wifi, example being sitting on my patio in my rear garden, my iPad 9th gen gives me 59Mbps.
My Sky broadband speed is 75/20Mbps.

Mind, cannot wait when I get Toob to be seeing that showing in the many 100s :)

Just checked the local roadworks and it seems there is a lot of planned activity in the area once again, some of the dates are out as far as mid April, the work on Botley road as been fairly extensive, they have channeled the length of the pavement previously before Christmas and did some work last month as well, hopefully this is just to finish things off rather than fix issues. My hunch says end of March date won’t happen and it will be more like end April.. I hope I am wrong.

Yeah I saw the other day but forgot to post

Good spot, looks like it’s moved out of Bitterne and into Sholing slightly, it’s not moved for a while so we must be due a big update soon.

Map overnight has been extended in Gosport too.
In build now covers the work that has been happening Jan/Feb to a small area on the eastern side.
