Arris NVG578LX and other You questions

I'm very new to You (and this forum), having just moved from Plusnet's FTTC.

1. One of the features listed for this router, is the usb port. I wonder if anyone might have found a use for this port? Being able to plug a usb stick in, and access the files, would be useful.

2. On the back of the router, is a green socket, next to the above usb socket, what is that for?

3. I'm fine at the moment, but if I decided to buy into (not rent) MESH, does this router support MESH?

4. I took You's basic VoIP service, to retain my landline number, and it was enabled late Tuesday. I know nowt about VoIP, is there some sort of list of it's facilities? I've already found it supports call-waiting, but what else is there?

So far, I'm absolutely delighted with YouFibre.

So this was getting more and more common, but SMBv1 was old and very insecure, so got deprecated, this was the method most of the routers were using to provide a "shared usb stick" - this may be the reason they don't really document it anymore - because if you try to access it from Windows10/11, you won't be able to without installing the old role/fighting lots of warning prompts.

Useful if you need a microcontroller nearby the device though :) low powered esp32 or similar wouldn't take much juice from the router.

As carl listed above: ( This )

Has it listed as "fibre" on their diagram and looks like its for an optic (up to 2.5gig), if i'm following you correctly. Though I haven't seen one "in the flesh", and I also don't know what your setup looks like currently.
Edit: I *Believe* if you have an ONT prior to this device, it won't be in use as the fibre will terminate there and you'll have a connection to the WAN on the Arris.

Personally I would always decouple WiFi & your router. When you need to change one or the other its changing one device (or set if you have multiple APs) and takes load off the router in use. ISP provided kit is usually not the most overspecced.

From the same document i've linked above:
Call Waiting; Call Hold; Call Resume; Call ForwardUnconditional; Call Forward on Busy; Caller ID;3-Way Conference; Call Consultant;Call Transfer and network-initiated classservices—MWI messaging, VMWI via FSK

But that would depend on YouFibre supporting those features as well. I unfortunately do not have Netomnia available to me so cant' confirm either way but that is what the device is capable of.

Thanks...

Yes, they installed an ONT before the router, which is then plugged into what seems to be a dual purpose WAN/LAN socket, occupying one of the four. It has rather left me, one LAN socket short. I just wondered why, the fibre wasn't plugged into the fibre socket, if that was it purpose?

The fibre interface on the Arris isn't compatible with the network. Has to use the dual-use port fed by a separate ONT.

After the move to fibre and YouFibre's 150Mbps service, in the past couple of weeks, speedtest has consistently shown 150Mbps plus, both up and down, until this weekend. This weekend, some down tests showed as low as 6Mbps, though up was not quite so bad. Even now, on Monday morning, it's still not back to a consistent full speed. The down speedtest, begins at quite a lowish speed, then often increases part way through, to full speed.
