Athlon64 Heatsink and Fan??

Today I purchased an Athlon64 3200+ cpu (non-retail version) and an Arctic Cooling Silencer64 heatsink and fan. The heatsink is too big for the retention bracket on the motherboard.

How do I install it?

Is it normal to remove the retention bracket for some heatsinks?

The Arctic Cooling website does not cover this model, and I'm really annoyed that I might not be able to install my new board and cpu tonight.

Any help will be gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,

Iain.

when you say too big, do you mean the springs ends won't fit on the motherboard lugs?

or the sides of the heatsink hitting capacitors etc?

if its just the spring, then dismantle the heatsink and replace it with another from a old fan that does fit.

As for physical size best to check OCing web sites and there forums for people that have that motherboard as well, checking for what they used.

Stop gap fix is a quick visit to PC hell World tomorrow and get a cheapo fan tomorrow.

Never having seen that CPU & HSF let alone installed them, I'm afraid I can't help much.

However, after looking around, there appears to be an increasing problem of CPUs/Motherboards/HSF combinations being supplied without the correct (or even missing) HSF fixings.
If you sourced all of the components from one supplier, I'd refer the problem back to them and ask for an immediate solution.

Sorry I can't help any further.

I dont think the Heatsink & Fan you have purchased is suitable for an Athlon 64. The previous Athlons were Socket A. The Athlon 64's appear to be a Socket 754 or 940 so probably it will not fit. Don't try to force it you may damage your Processor.

hmm looking at the bottom of it, looks like its secured directly to the motherboard with a clamp underneath the motherboard, so do the screws not match the holes on your motherboard?
