Austrian MNVO Spusu launches in the UK

A new entrant to the UK market hoping to challenge the likes of Voxi, Smarty and Giff Gaff is currently offering two new plans to UK users with one giving unlimited EE data for £19.90 or discounted to £14.90 but only if taken up prior to the 29th June.

They also offer reasonable EU roaming with 15GB Data, 500 Minutes/SMS to use within the EU as well as 500 UK to EU Minutes although this drops to 10GB Data if you use the Spusu 30 plan.

5G and 4G calling is offered as standard but there isn't any mention of wifi calling on the website.

Now just to wait for the usual suspects to come along and try them out...

@hle13 You should change MNO to MVNO, for a second I was so excited to have another champion challenging the big 3.

Had a quick look, eSim.. that's nice, but only 2 plans and quite expensive too. Where's the £5 plan?

Loads of people are working from home, I for example usually need less than 1GB of data per month for my smartphone.

They seem to be competing more with the likes of eSim.net rather than Lebara or Smarty.

FAQ section states that they support VoLTE but only on selected handsets. So, it's likely that they do support WifI calling.

My initial thoughts:
  • Their plans are subject to annual increases
  • Nobody under the age of 18 is allowed to sign up
  • They currently only offer two plans (Unlimited/30GB)
  • Base price is expensive
One-off Fees
  • Damage to or failure to return the SIM card in case of exercising the right of withdrawal (£4.00)
  • For cancellations in the first month following the £4.00 activation of your SIM card (£4.00)
  • Charges in case of unsuccessful credit card payment (without VAT) (Max £25.00)
  • Charges in case of unsuccessful BACS debit payment (without VAT) (Max £10.00)
  • Creation and shipping of another duplicate invoice (£3.00)
  • Costs of a replacement SIM card including shipping (£6.00)

I would say thats pretty good for 20 quid a month, you can also sign up for the Promo deal and have up to 6 months grace before you activate the Plan(s).

They are also quoting - "spusu uses EE's Network to provide reliable coverage without any speed caps, All spusu plans include high-speed 5G at no extra cost"

I wonder if they know about EE's Unlimited Data 600gb FUP and its ascociated Speed Capping?

They will when they get rumbled. 😁

It's not a bad deal considering the specs, but.. do you need all that?
In my circle of friends and family nobody needs that much.
Of course, there are people who do, but is that a critical enough mass of potential customers to launch with? I doubt it.

Of course they are aware, don't be silly, but it'd be bad marketing to mention it, especially on launch day!

As do EE -

HOW DO EE UNLIMITED PLANS WORK

HOW DO UNLIMITED PLANS WORK?

If you’re getting unlimited data, get it on the UK’s No.1 network. We give you the UK’s fastest 4G, and the coverage your unlimited data deserves, with no allowance limits and no speed caps. You can even gift data your data!

Are there any speed caps?

No, on EE, all of our unlimited plans are un-throttled so you can access the fastest speeds that are available in the area.

Is there a fair use policy?

All of our unlimited plans are uncapped so you can use as much data as you like, as long as it's for personal use. For more information on personal use, please see our terms and conditions.

Will we cap download speeds?

No, you enjoy the same speeds downloading as you can with all other usage.

Can I tether or use hotspots?

Yes, you can hotspot off your phone as long as it's for personal use only. For more information on personal use, please see our terms and conditions.

Can I gift data on an unlimited plan?

Yes, if you’re on a unlimited plan you can gift up to 100GB of data or 120GB if you’re on a 5G smart handset plan. This will be the first 100/120GB and any data usage will reduce your giftable allowance.

Can I roam with unlimited data?

Yes, you can still use your plan abroad in our roam like home destinations but will be subject to the data fair use policy (given the roaming plans) - you have a 50GB data allowance and can't roam for more than 3 consecutive months.

Are unlimited plans available for multi plan discount?

Yes, if you take an unlimited plan as an additional line, you can get 10% off.

If I take an unlimited plan as an additional line, will I still get the 1GB data boost?

Yes, your unlimited plan will still contribute a 1GB data boost to the lead line on the account. If the lead line is an unlimited plan, this will be added to your giftable allowance.

What happens to my data boost if I take an unlimited plan?

Any data boosts added to you plan will increase your giftable allowance.

The legal bit

Unlimited Plans: Uncapped and Unlimited data - If you're outside the UK you'll be subject to the data fair use policy cap (given in your roaming plan). Personal, non-commercial use only. If you regularly tether 12 or more devices, we will consider this non-personal use and have the right to move you to a more suitable plan. We will consider usage above 600GB/month to be non-personal use and have the right to apply traffic management controls to deprioritise your mobile traffic during busy periods or to move you to a business plan. If you are on a Smart Handset or Smart SIM plan you can choose from 3 Inclusive Extras (Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video, BT Sport or the Roam Further Pass). 5G Handset customers can gift up to 120GB all other unlimited customers can gift up to 100GB. Data usage on an unlimited plan will decrement from giftable allowance. Any data boost allowance will be added to the giftable allowance.
NO. 1 NETWORK: Based on the RootMetrics® UK RootScore® Report: H1 (Jan – Jun) 2019. Tested at locations across the UK with the best commercially available smartphones on 4 national mobile networks across all available network types. Your experiences may vary. The RootMetrics award is not an endorsement of EE. Visit ROOTMETRICS.CO.UK for more details.

I have edited my original post above to include a list of their one-off charges.
Failure to return the SIM card or ordering a replacement incurs a fee.

That's what they telling me below:

spusu Unlimited provides unlimited data within the UK. EU browsing is limited to 15GB. Our unlimited plans are for personal and non-commercial use. The SIM cards should not be used as long-term alternative to home broadband. If you download, send, or upload excessive amounts of content, we may view it as violation of this policy.

With the spusu unlimited plan, there is no formal cap on your data allowance. However, we do reserve the right to investigate if we notice unusual and/or excessive activity.

I think it should be ok for every days mobile use of surf the browser, email, playstore updates, video chat via whatsapp, signal, facetime, watching few times on live sports mobile etc (if they don't accept this, then 1p mobile is the only option for 200GB data for £20)

Unless you want tp use the EE network without paying EE prices and/or want EU roaming included, there are cheaper unlimited deals from Three or IDMobile.

Up and sorted within 40 mins.

No 4G calling or WiFi calling. 4G calling does work actually now it’s on.

Speeds ok, high ping around 90.

Asked me to install a profile to get apn sorted, removed it and still working fine.

Responsive WhatsApp support.

Will be cancelling as not needed but it’ll be outside the first month.

Shows LTE not 4G.

is that with Spusu?

Likely shows LTE because they use 234/40 MCC/MNC and devices may not have a carrier configuration for that to use so falls back to the software defaults.

AMBR is reported as 500/100, but seemingly not enforced (speedtests go higher)
