Thanks Mark,

I hadn't actually heard of that - how would I go about doing that?

I have been on the phone to Avanti and was assured by Renee that they definitely do not block websites. She said she wold investigate it and phoned back and said that she tried it from her end using the same connection as me and it worked fine. (She had actually been playing Scrabble for twenty minutes!) So they can't replicate the problem, so basically I don't have a problem!!

As well as trying the laptop elsewhere yesterday and it worked fine, today I tried with the old way of dial-up and, low and behold, the site loaded perfectly. I told her this. But still, she said there was nothing they could do as the problem couldn't be replicated. After persisting, she has said she will ask someone else to check it out. (We'll wait and see!)

I am no expert, but surely it doesn't take a genius to work out that the problem must lie with Avanti when I can connect to the site by other means.

The OpenDNS server you are talking about sounds like a good way of finding out if it is their server at fault.

You should find some guides on the OpenDNS.org website, it's usually quite easy to do and there are several ways of making it work. You will probably need to reboot your PC after making the change and if it doesn't help then you can just put it back to automatic again.

Netgear connection

Hi Liz, I was waiting till I heard from you, but I didn't get notification of your posting. Any chance that you can post the instructions and the correct sequence of switching on - I have tried various connections, but stlll no luck. I do have some info which says I should be using the Netgear router as a bridge rather than as a router, but I am not sure how to go about that.

I'll do that if you want, but there is loads of info on the CD for setting it up. Did you get a CD? If you didn't, you should go to the Netgear website - it lets you download the manuals. Here's the basic stuff, but as I say, there is a lot more on the CD, like trouble shooting guides. Other thing that I'll add is that these instructions are for my model. Yours may be different.

Turn off your computer.

Turn off and unplug the cable from your broadband modem.

Locate the Ethernet cable that connects your computer to the modem.

Disconnect the cable at the modem end only. You will connect it to the router later.

Locate the Ethernet cable that came with your NETGEAR product. Securely insert one end of the Ethernet cable into your modem and the other end into the Internet port of the wireless router. (The Ethernet cable and the Internet port label are color coded.)

Locate the Ethernet cable that is attached to your computer. Securely insert that cable into a LAN port on the router, such as LAN port 1.

Connect any additional wired PCs to your router by inserting an Ethernet cable from a PC into one of the three remaining LAN ports.

When your network cables are connected, you are ready to start your network. Start your network in the correct sequence, as described below.

Failure to start or restart your network in the correct sequence could prevent you from accessing the Internet.
To start your network:

Plug in and turn on the cable or DSL modem. Wait 2 minutes.

Plug the power cord into your wireless router and into a power outlet. Wait 1 minute.

Turn on your computer. It will take several minutes for your router to establish a connection with your computer and your Internet provider.

Hope the above helps. I copied and pasted it from the disc. The first time we tried to do it, we had the computer on so we could read the manual, but it didn't work that way. Next time I went exactly as per instructions, right down to checking on my watch for the time.
Liz

Do any of you know the reality of satellite broadband?

I think you are all going a bit over the top. The reality is if they turned off your broadband and told you to go back to dial up.... You would all want it turned back on.

Satellite is very different from adsl/cable have you read the wikipedia article? http://tinyurl.com/4694nm

I work in finance and it's not rocket science to me that satellite isn't good for voip and video streaming

also from what I've read you shouldn't use speed test websites because of the latency you should download a test file and measure that way.

Adsl2 the same as satellite

My firefox update is only downloading at 4096kbps on my 20000kbps connection.
Should I be blaming o2? Or maybe the server I am connected too is slow, or maybe there are other people in the house downloading at the same time as me. Or maybe is peak hour.... But it's 117am so it must be the server my update is coming from because my o2 download test is showing a download speed of 16000kbps.... Still not my full package though... Must be the nature of any kind of Internet

To be fair, though I cannot speak for all speedtesters, most like ours do not use their websites own server for the measurment because webservers often have bandwidth caps per visitor. They will instead have special dedicated low latency ones setup to handle the test data itself.

These can usually test at rates well up to or even above 100Mbps and generally return a "best possible" picture of performance, though real-world usage of different services is often lower for some of the reasons you mention.

Netgear connection

Eureka! Lizz, thanks for all your help. Whilst your instructions did not directly sort the problem - they did indirectly. The instruction to insert the yellow cable into the internet port at the 'coloured coded end' made me realise that there was something wrong with my internet connection port. It was impossible to carry this out, so I had been using a LAN port. I have now splashed out on a Netgear the same model as yours and bingo I am now up and running wirelessly.
Thanks again.

That's great - glad you've got it working! We were concerned that having two computers running at the same time would drop our speed drastically, but it's been fine.

Ofcourse we dont want to go back to dial up......thats not the problem..The problem is after 2 years of dealing with Avanti I am totally fed up with being ripped off by paying £30 per month for a service that is 50% of what I am paying, the whole system is open to providers cashing in , If I am paying for 1MG I should get 1MG, if I get half that speed I should only pay half the price,
I am looking into the mobile dongle thing and if it works it will be goodbye Avanti and no I will not be giving them a years notice..

Having now moved house I am back with ADSL and getting less than 1Mg speed at best. I left my dish and receiver at the last house, but then as I am in a conservation area I doubt I would have been able to install the satellite dish here anyway.
