AVC broadband seems excellent new entrant

I've got to say that the new one-way satellite service being offered by AVC broadband from January appears to be well worth waiting for. I know there are copy-cat mobs claiming to offer similar services - such as Everywhere! Broadband - but the AVC service will use my existing Sky mini-dish which is great! Me thinks this new service will be a huge success.

I think you'll find plenexis service launched months ago from the 28 degree cluster of satellites and is easily obtainable from a minidish and yes without moving it either. look at www.cpsat.co.uk or one of the many others of sellers. So i dont know whats unique about it, if the only thing you can say is that its on astra then thats sad. Because the dish doesnts care what satellite its looking at and sky broadcast from astra 28.2 and eutelsat 28.5 east without any loss of signal as the satellite are that far away the distance between them is negligiable, thats the whole point of clustering and why there are three astra satellite clustered at 28.2, they are only given different numbers slots for legal reasons but they are all effectively clustered.

Don't go with AVC Broadband. I know they look really good on paper, but they have a 1GB limit before they cap you to dialup speeds during peak hours.

The thread starter looks suspiciously like he owns the company.. reporting :)

1 gig??

Eeknay are you sure it's only 1GB you're allowed? Is that per week? If so that really is total crap.

The only thing satellite is any good for is downloading large files, but all the providers impose such ridiculous limits that you can't even do that.

I e-mailed the company, and they said 1GB was a "fair amount", but they didn't specify over what time period. I'm guessing either a weekly or a monthly basis.

it will be monthly, some providers really dont have a clue - think we go onto the internet and download txt files or something. Sorry but advertising your own ISP by pretending to be a regular forum subscriber is a very old trick and anyone with half a brain cell can see straight through it. Talk about negative advertising.

Taken from there site

Are there limits of how much data I can transfer?

No, however, where a user is downloading excessive amounts of data, their bandwidth may be restricted during peak times.

What a load of ****

I work as an self-employed satellite installer, and have installed AVC Broadband, EOL Opensky and various others, and I don't know where you are all getting your facts from.

There is NO DOWNLOAD LIMIT with AVC broadband, and most others limit you to 30Gb before they switch on a bandwidth throttle.

So whoever told you there was (if they did) was wrong.

AVC also now offer an ISP free of charge for certain speed packages, so you don't have to pay the extra £15 or so a month for a service like Wanadoo or Tiscali

Only Satdrive and AVC resell a service from Astra 28.2 in this country, and at present there are no broadband services on Eurobird at 28.5 (Eutelsat), so if you are using this service you will want your dish 'tweaked' for the Astra satellite, and not set in the 23.5 position used for both 28.2 & 28.5, as this will impair your carrier-to-noise ratio on the data channel. No Sky TV channels are affected by this.

No doubt someone will reply to this and say I am biased because I have done some work for AVC, but I do wish people would get their facts right.

Well, at the end of the day the day, it seems you are just installing the system and not using it on a daily basis, (Most) of the customers who use your system on a daily basis have the view that service is very poor and restricted and of course they have their facts in good order, although AVC is one of the only service on Astra 28.2, it is so poor that many of your customers have simply forked out the extra cash on a dish for 33E and moved to Micronet, at least it is truelly unlimited and does not have "invisible" download limits imposed and you can still get Sky and Broadband via one dish if you like.

We are not boasting about our service, but one fact that is straight, is that Micronet is (as many other providers are) better than AVC. :)

Well this is slightly out of date now. satdrive is no longer in operation, it was a resold part of the skydsl service which is now operating in europe, and even that operated from the telecom 2d satelite from 8 west. Also avc sell an astra product, silvermead also sell this astra product, there are many resellers who are reselling the avc product.

And as far as no download limit goes, well that never works with satellite and people dont fall for that anymore, its like telling us all the beer is free but we have to suck it all up through the thinnest of straws. (Its the throtteling that counts)

I looked at every available option for satellite broadband after satdrive shut down, and they all have some kind of catch it seems, either stupidly harsh download limits, or some rip off gear strategy.

In the end i decided to go with micronet, so far im very happy, i can download what i like and the speeds are good, and theres no 'oh you've downloaded 3Gb this month, you only get 4kb/s now'

AVC sell an Astra product, Micronet a Eutelsat/Opensky, in fact is there aren't any companies like this I know of that can afford to have their own satellite to do everything themselves.

I do use the AVC service myself, and I use it even though I have a 512Kb/sec ADSL line, as it provides me with a more stable, and quicker download - rarely dropping below 100KB/Sec, and mostly above. (I use a 1Mbit/s connection)

I have only met 5 unsatisfied customers (out of over 200 I have dealt with), these were all due to equipment failures (tuner blowing in the receiver), but there are always some, and am installing more every day. Most of these people are having it installed on recommendation from other customers - not from advertising.

People don't recommend a rubbish service to their friends or neighbours, and there are people in my area that I recommended it to who use it with no problems and think it's great.

Because the dish is used for Sky too, they have to use Sky registered installers, or else within the first 12Months of a Sky installation the systems' warranty is invalidated if the dish is modified/changed by someone who isn't.

Unlike Micronet, I am not a rep, agent or reseller of AVC's product. I am an end-user who liked the system, Install Sky for a living, and now I install AVC Broadband in certain areas of the country, as they were looking for installers.

AVC Broadband doesn't need self-praise from a rep.

No not with you as the Unofficial Sales person. You have done a great job. I think you have pretty well convinced people hear that AVC is a company to avoid. They have seen dozens of similar people making excessive claims of a service. Making Claims its unlimited etc.

I use the AVC service from one of their resellers, its cheaper from a reseller and no 12 month contract :)

I wouldnt say it was that perfect, better than nothing though.

I managed to grab a linux ISO ok, the problem was my dialup kept cutting off, what a pain

What to do? Am choosing between AVC and Micronet. Micronet seem to have a customer service problem, but I see complaints about AVC, although they are quite helpful. How are things looking in Spring 2005 with these companies. Would one go with Micronet at their £19.99 package. They say unlimited! AVC says £55 umlimited. Who to believe? I have Sky already. My phone line is awful and Micronet says a satellite router will help. HELP!

On the subject of one way sat is it technically possible to roam around Europe mainly Spain & Portugal in a motorhome using mobile phone for upload and existing Sky dish (tuned to Astra) for download. If so who would provide such a service?

TIA
