Avoid gnhosting for hosting

I had been with gnhosting since August 2002 (when they were known as Ghoulnet).

In that time, I've had to re-build my site from scratch on 2 new servers as they failed to make back-ups in those days and the servers gave up the ghost. But, they made promises of buying new equipment and said things would be much better in the future. Like a twit, I believed them.

Since re-naming themselves gnhosting and installing new equipment, I thought all would be fine. Last month, they started to migrate people over to some even newer servers. My site was often down and for some reason, they had problems with getting the sites from the server I was on, to the new equipment.

I suffered several days without any website available.

After 10th August 2007, I was unable to back my Msql databases up properly. No matter how often I tried, it would keep timing out. So, I raised an urgent support ticket. The ticket was ignored, so I opened another ticket, refering to the previous and explaining how disatisfied I was that they had ignored me and how worried I was that I was unable to back my databases up.

I did get a reply and an offer of a free months service to cover the downtime. However, my problems didn't end there. I had email problems, a very slow intermittant site (forum members moaning they kept loosing posts etc with lots of 'page not found' messages) and the servers own automated back-up wasn't working.

So, I raised another urgent ticket. This was ignored. Then I raised another which was also ignored.

gnhosting are totally uncontactable if you have problems. Gnhosting do not supply any email address to contact them with, they do not even have a phone number you can contact them on. They rely totally on a support tickets system and if they choose to ignore your tickets, your stuffed.

Well, I bit the bullet and moved to another host. I'm now with Zen Internet hosting. I sent gnhosting a support ticket at 8am in the morning in to say "cancel my account". Funny, by 10am my site had been removed. So, it shows they do read the tickets you send them but they choose to ignore you much of the time (and regular members here will know how much I hate being ignored :laugh: )

After 5 years of putting up with their crummy servers (5 years of mis-placed loyalty) - I finally had enough and moved my site. I should have done it years ago.

I strongly advise anybody thinking of buying hosting, do not use gnhosting. They may be cheap, but they are not even cheerful. If you value your hard work, don't let gnhosting get their hands on your website.

I signed up for GNhosting like an idiot yesterday because they were the only UK hosts I knew and had used once before.

When I was trying to figure out how in the heck to add php elements to the site (12 hours work right there) I discovered most were not compatible with their servers and to add to the humiliation, they sent me an email telling me I had gone over my bandwidth!

Needless to say I wasn't going to mess around with them and tried to transfer to a new host this morning. Well, big surprise, not happening. There is no support at all and trying to find contact details is looking for a needle in a haystack.

However, I perservered and through companies house, managed to get the Directors personal mobile number which I shall be ringing shortly.

If you would like to be able to do the same, go to companies house on the internet (search through google) and pay a £1 fee and voila! contact at last!

For those who cant be bothered doing that, the document is available at the following addy for a limited period:

http://www.aia-playpens.com/ghoulnet.pdf

surprise surprise, thats a ghoulnet server that I cant get off of.

I'll let you know how that pans out.

sephrenia,

did you get anywhere with the mobile number or with GN Hosting at all, they appear to have vanished!

OMG I had a nightmare with these guys. One of the domains I had registered with them was close to expiring, and I wanted to transfer it away from them. They had me over a barrel because they ignored my request to check the incorrect Auth codes. Essentially I was being forced into renewing the domain with GNHosting.

Luckily, I got in touch with enom (for whom the are or were a reseller) and asked them to help me. They did, I was able to renew the domain through them and transfer it out.

I'm with Bluehost.com who are absolutely fantastic. They phoned me up when I set up my account to go over my order, go through everything that was available to me and to check if I needed anything more.

On the other side were GNHosting who ignored FOUR "Critical" support tickets for over a month.

S T A Y A W A Y from them is my advice.

GNhosting has the flakiest domain renewals system I have seen. Renewals that are over and done with in a few minutes with other hosting companies become uncertain long drawn out affairs at GNhosting.

You could all too easily end up loosing a domain name.

I still haven't got an Auth code out of them from months back but as soon as I do my few remaining domain names at GNhosting are g-o-n-e.

Contacting GNhosting - is it possible?

Update:

On a domain where the renewal is screwed for some reason, even though I have an invoice marked as paid, the support ticket I raised has gone unanswered for over a day now.

Emails to the support address given at the bottom of the invoice have been bounced and check out the phone number given by GNhosting.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions, our billing contact is below:

Does anyone know another way to contact them - things are getting desperate?

Thanks Kits :) - didn't think to contact Nominet for contact details they may have.

I have a .com problem too. An earlier post referred to GHhosing as eNom resellers but I though they were Register.com resellers? Anyone know for certain ... and any tips on how to go over GNhosting's heads if I have to?

Thx

I've not been around here for years. Is it too late to join this discussion?

I've just discovered that my domain xrdbear.com has expired. It was hosted with GNhosting and they did not remind me. It expired on the 12th June. Suddenly I have no mail and no website, likewise a friend who had his mail going through my domain and forwarded.

If you try and get to my webpage you get a page, probably concocted by Enom Inc, using 'bear' as the theme trying to sell various services. Is this the normal way of dealing with domain expiry?

So far GNhosting have not answered my ticket, which seems about par for the course judging by this thread. Do you think I have lost this domain? I can't think anyone else would want it

I also notice looking at the WHOIS that GNhosting have never updated the registration details at previous renewals. It still has my home address from two moves ago and it still has the name Ghoulnet with some telephone numbers that do not answer. Is it possible that Nominet have not been able to contact GNhosting and that is why I have not had a reminder?

All help and advice greatly appreciated.

Brian

personally, l like not having my details on the lookups, theres allot of room for abuse if your not a company.

Somebody pointed this out to me a while ago. The other domains I have all have this information hidden. Fortunately/unfortunately thie information on the domain in question won't cause me a problem only the guys that moved into my house

Still no reply from GNhosting, Monday maybe.

personally ld move them all over to godaddy.com given the chance, they host my domains and lve not had any issues with them been with them for maybe 7 years now.

Getting domains back from GN Hosting

Having read this thread I thought it worth adding my own experiences as to how I solved a similar problem with GN Hosting.

I had about 10 domains registered with them and started to worry things were going wrong when support requests started going un-answered. I tried for about a month to contact them regarding releasing my domains to another provider, but to no avail.

GN Hosting are just a re-seller - they aren't actually the registrant company. I managed to find out that they actually register their domains via an American company - www.register.com

I contacted their technical support and, after needing to supply some documentation as proof of ownership, they were able to unlock and transfer all my domains for me and were extremely helpful. I would recommend anyone with a GN Hosting account of any sort to do the same. Here's a copy of what I sent/received from register.com - in the hope it helps anyone else stuck with GNhosting:

Hi

I have a domain name that I registered through a company in the UK called GN Hosting. I need to transfer this domain name away from them, but they appear to have gone out of business. They have not responded to letters, e-mails or phone calls in the last six-months that I have been trying to contact them....

When I do a WHOIS search, I notice that the Whois details show register.com as the registrar. I assume they use you to register their domains or are part of your Global Partner Network.

Is there a way I can come directly to you to get this domain unlocked so I can transfer it to a different provider, as I have no way of contacting this company and no way of regaining control of my own domain name
-----

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting Rconnection.com Support.

We have sent the partner an email. They have 72 hours to respond, if we or you do not hear from them within 72 hours we can take action on your behalf. We can create a new account and provide you the support needed

------

Dear Valued Customer,
