Bandiwdth limitation programs

ok due to unforseen circumstances l have obtained a MAC code for my current ISP EurISP for whats deemed as excessive port useage, now while l didnt know there was port limitations this was not a question l asked of them when l joined so l now know better with regards to questions l should ask when joining.

anywho l do use bittorrent, and have found plugins to use to limit between periods of time (to better use my bandwidth when l am torrenting and limiting only at peak times to reasonable speeds)

however l found a program called TrafficShaperXp as l wish to quietly limit bandwidth without my family noticing as they have no idea about what is considered downloading and with regards to my sister who the more l tell not to use it when there are limits will spite me and use it much more (yeah shes an adult but we dont get on so theres not much l can do to curb her youtube'ing unless l make it look like a FUP)

in short lm looking for a management software to install on all systems within my house to limit usage between certain times... specifically the speed so less resources are used at peak times in terms of speed.

for myself if a download manage did something like this it would be useful as something reasonably automated would suit me better as lm not around at all times to kick things like these in to gear.

http://www.netlimiter.com/

I used it in the past (old version) to limit flatmates. If done carefully they dont notice unless they themselves monitor bandwidth.. I havent used the newer versions. Shareware and some paid licence versions with more features.

so lm assuming one can set limits at peak times, restrictions if you will that will kick in betweeh two specified times.. the idea is not really to restrict as much as keep from hitting the threshold of a given limit depending on my new ISP

hmm, i cant seem to find any apps which do this within time limits :s I thought i saw one before but cant seem to find it again sorry.

appreciate the help, l'll be taking a look at the program but it will be nice to have a choice and find one that does exactly to my specs however regardless l'll be trying everything at least once XD

hmm just thinking outside the box a sec..maybe you could try and set windows tasks to come on at whatever times you want.. and turn off again at x time.. and have it run netlimiter then...

so create your own peak and offpeak controls..

that could do the trick..?

heh, ld rather have something do it without the worry of manually doing it, especially when concerning the downstairs comp (the one my sister uses) as that way l dont have to turn it on because its already running in the background so to speak (there is no way she would run the progam otherwise, l could call my sister a few things but she has a habit of doing things that adversely affect me, especially when it concerns my income.)

yeah, with task manager it can be set to run automatically. Im not certain if it would bring the app to the foreground or keep it in the background though... you would need to check. I think..it may be able to be background based.

however, you can run it on your pc..and set it to limit her ip... ie im pretty sure you dont need to do it on her's

as long as it will run and can be done remotely then its not too bad as long as l can keep an eye on usage, its just the need to keep usage realistic and be able to limit per peak time would be useful since l could prioritize better that way, and make sure that regardless l always have the best speed at any given time l need it...

sadly lm left with three choices by the looks of it...
Eclipse
Virgin
Tiscali

all seem to have allot of bad publicity and some limits arnt shown as such and l definitely want to stear clear of Tiscali if possible so l will be ringing around Eclipse and Virgin to see if l can get the limits, for example what usage at peak times is and if there is a monthly value to that then add the hours and get my programs such as bittorrent for example my client azureus has a plugin to allow for limiting between two periods of time and given that l can calculate the bandwidth between two points for an entire month l should be able to keep within limits as long as lm able to prioritize properly, the same being for other traffic and download managers, altho it would have been nice to actually have a program that would have done it all in one.

I've been looking at Virgin too and found this in their FAQ:

What traffic management are you applying to the heaviest users?

Monitoring traffic:

Well each week we'll monitor how much data our Broadband customers download during peak times only. We measure this in kilobytes (KB). Peak times run from 4pm till midnight. We then add up the total amount of data downloaded over the week per customer. We then rank the list of customers, heaviest users first. From this list, we pick out the top 5% of heaviest users over the week. We reserve the right to traffic manage these customers during peak times. Traffic management lasts for just 1 week and is only applied during peak times (4pm till midnight).

Traffic Management:

For the small number of customers who are in the top 5% of heaviest users, our traffic management solution will temporarily set download speeds to no lower than 512Kbit/s. This limit is applied daily, 4pm until midnight, for 1 week.

During off-peak periods our traffic management solution will automatically reset download speeds back to their full speed.

Each week we review our top 5% heaviest peak-time users over the previous 7 days. We then update the refreshed customer list to our servers for traffic shaping.

Speed limit:

Even for the small number of customers whose service is traffic managed there is a limited impact. At 512Kbit/s a customer can still download around 50 music tracks in an hour as well as watching the odd streamed video. And don't forget, outside peak periods we reset the Broadband service back to its original speed.

There are still no limits to how much customers can download. We believe in unlimited downloads and will not cap the amount of data you download over your Broadband service.

Now I can understand that: I think it is fair and well-defined and I could keep to it. Unfortunately it is not part of their terms and conditions, but on the plus side they did get a respectable customer score of 76% on uSwitch and their rate for migrating customers is just £10 per month for the first year.

In the end though it's like picking a dentist - ask for some recommendations and then take pot luck

Do let us know if you discover anything about Eclipse.

mmm. Id go against eclipse. Looking at one of the review sites they have gone down so far, they are rated very low compared to most other ISPs. I think their cheap packages are catching up with them.

Im having issues too, various sites not loading, yahoo mail not working properly, etc. Could be my line suddenly developing a fault, but its definatly not my equipment/cables as I have swapped it all about.

l went with virgin finally, gave them my mac got usernames and passwords etc just waiting on the go live date etc..

regardless of the fact they have their own FUP l plan to limit myself lower than their FUP level at peak times, hopefully the same with other computers in the house with programs l can hide so my sister doesnt do her usual spite me act, that and hopefully with regards to my issues l will not get disconnections and with the chance my profile will reset to my original faster speeds.
