BBC & YouTube - It's Official

The BBC has announced details of its deal with YouTube -

The deal with Google - non-exclusive and set to run for several years - will establish three different YouTube services:

* BBC: One of the BBC's two entertainment channels will be a "public service" proposition, featuring no advertising.

It will show clips like trailers and short features that add value - for example, video diaries of David Tennant showing viewers around the set of Dr Who or BBC correspondent Clive Myrie explaining how difficult it is to report from the streets of Baghdad.

The channel's main purpose is to popularise current programming and drive traffic back to the BBC's own website, and point the audience to the BBC's pages, where they can watch or download programmes in full, once the BBC Trust approves the corporation's catch-up television proposal, called iPlayer.

* BBC Worldwide: The second entertainment channel will feature self-contained clips - about three to six minutes long - mining popular programmes in the BBC's archive. Excerpts from Top Gear, The Mighty Boosh and nature programmes presented by David Attenborough are top candidates for this channel.

This YouTube page will carry advertising such as banner adverts, and possibly pre-roll adverts (shown as part of the video clip) as well. Controversially, the BBC Worldwide page - adverts and all - can be seen in the UK.

BBC Worldwide insists that this is not a new departure, as BBC magazines like Top Gear and channels like BBC World and UK Living already do carry advertising.

* BBC News: The news channel, which will be launched later this year, will show about 30 news clips per day. It will be advertising funded and similar to deals with Yahoo USA and Real Networks.

Because of the advertising, these clips can be seen outside the UK only. Any UK users clicking on a link to one of the news clips on YouTube will get a message that they have no access to this clip.

I wonder how much they'll actually make in revenue ? :hrmph:

Its time to abolish the BBC licence fee and make them go it alone like other TV channels it si unfair they get such a large supsiday to show crap.

I think the BBC World website has always carried advertising (link) so I'm not really sure why this would be controversial. I just paid for a new TV licence yesterday; what really bothers me (apart from the effect it has on people on low fixed incomes e.g. benefit claimants, pensioners) is that I'm not paying for _real_ public service broadcasting in many cases. How much of what I see on the BBC isn't already offered by other channels ?

I like the BBC: they do make some good shows and I'm certain a lot would be commercially unviable if it wasn't for the licence fee.

You really want the BBC to show adverts and to have to chase ratings (in order to get advertisers)?

They may show some rubbish, but at least it's advert free rubbish, unlike other channels.

The price is now too high for the rubbish they show sorry but i have even given up watchig BBC there is nothing on i like anymore I seem top be on sky more so see the BBC charge for nothing so a rip off. The BBC shuldn't have backdoor type taxation which the BBC licence is.

My main gripe is that its treated as a TV licence. Although its only to pay for the BBC channels. You get them weather you watch them or not.

When you think of things such as Chris Moyles' pay, along with many others that you might not watch/listen to your start to think its not worth it.

This is just some DJ's, and I doubt there has been many paycuts since then. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/4919678.stm

Thats a lot of subscribers money!

Chris Moyles is an overpaid telentless idiot. Yes he sounds half decent on radio, but get him away from his scripted comfort zone and stick him in front of a camera and he looks like some stupid lost for words moron.

I dislike him too. Used to find him funny, but now just rather obnoxious.

I do like Terry, but no matter how much I like him, I dont think hes worth £800,000 (or whatever hes on now) a year.

Id much rather see more series like planet earth.

on a side note, something intresting l got appraoched on, about 3 years ago when l was living on my own l had the TV licenceing ppl knock on my door demanding money or l be fined, heres the kick in the teeth l DIDNT have a TV not even one within my place about the only thing l did have was a computer which l was supprised to find out was causing the problem "supposedly" in fact lm lead to believe some cirtain monitors do send out mixed signals.. in fact l think the older ones were worse as they had less shielding so when the TV van came by with its tools to see who was watching without a licence.. either that or someone tried to report me.. but hey monitors can cause those types of probs which are detectable within a cirtain distance l believe

You don't know what crap TV is until you've been to the USA and watched 900 channels of it. The BBC keeps the others almost honest.

I doubt your monitors where sending out mixed messages. Everytime you buy a TV or certain Monitors, your details are sent to the TV licensing people.
Thats how they know. Also I know someone who worked for a company to do with finding fee dodgers for years. They told me that the licensing people would call at certain times of the year for a list of people in the area who had purchased a License in a certain area. Any household that had not, got a visit from them saying they detected a TV at the property. They said the little arial and box they carried was a red herring, but people just cave in and buy one after the visit. The BBC should run without the licensing fee. Imagine having to pay a licence to BT just for owning a PC or mac, it's unfair, and they like every other company that used to have the monopoly on a service should change.

Bbc

If you want to pay then you should have the option. However if not, you dont have an option. I'm for freedom of choice. Why should people have to put up with enforced payment for something they may not wish to suscribe to?
The world has changed, technology has developed and we have more choice.
I pay because I'm law abidding, It could be that I value the BBC service and would continue to pay, but it should not be enforced.

We should all be allowed freedom of choice.
I dont expect others to pay for my entertainment. I pay for what I wish to recieve and enjoy.

I dont watch much television apart from the news and when viewing a DVD. Others in my household who I support, do watch a lot of TV, so I subscribe to sky and I would continue to subcribe to the BBC even if it was not enforced.

If I lived alone then I would think it unfair to subscribe to something I did not use or need.

supposedly there are ways to get around the TV licensing, however you have to provide definitive proof that your not watching TV supposedly, forget where l read or heard about about it but l do know the place was a place that had TV licensing info posted all over the place
