BE Landline

Please can I have your views on BE's landline service?

How does it compare to 'BT Retail' landline?

Is the service from BE better/worse etc?

Thanks
Mike

Generally speaking landline phone services usually just work as intended, unlike broadband where internet performance is like a yo-yo, so your primary base of comparison should really be to look at prices (rental, call rates etc.). It's also worth looking at BE's parent, O2 UK, which seems to have a cheaper phone solution for existing O2 customers.. maybe new ones too.

Otherwise there's not a vast technical separation and when things do go wrong then BT still get called out to fix the problem.

Yeah the only thing they should be aware of is 1) having to deal with any overseas support from whichever company they may choose for their landline (check what support is like first) and 2) costs involved if you at anytime want to take your line back to BTs control.

Hi,

As Mark says, there won't really be much (if any) difference in performance, telephone lines are not dependent on quality/distance the same way ADSL services are. The only difference you may notice is the call features offered by the two companies (such as BT's text service), but other than that you really shouldn't notice anything different on the way your line actually works. It really comes down to price, and the product you require. But there are lots of independent companies offering line rental and calls, and it may be worthwhile running a few searches to see what they can offer you in terms of line rental and call costs (although you could just take up line rental with one company, and pay for your calls with another) and products they can offer you on that line.

Just be cautious when unbundling your phone line that if it is a fully unbundled service (normally these are in the form of broadband and calls packages from one company) you wont be able to have your broadband from anyone else. Moving the line back to BT control can cost you £100+.
Personally id never recommend fully unbundling your line and shoving broadband and calls all to one provider, while it may save money if anything goes wrong or you are unhappy with the product (recent Talk Talk horror stories is a good example) it can be a complete pain to regain control of your line and get away from some LLU unbundled providers.
Just do some research first before you decide, a couple of quid saving a month may sound great but if it all goes pear shaped any saving can soon be wiped out just getting control of the line back.

In this case BE do not fully LLU lines, they just use BT WLR3. Moving back to BT or to another company remains no more difficult if you have taken BE Land Line.
However, I would say there are probably cheaper places to look than BE Land Line depending on your exact requirements for phone service.

Still means a 12 month contract minimum if you take both services from BE does it not? (No 3 month option if you want both services?)

Also if after a year you change the phone line back to BT and wish to keep your broadband with BE that will tie you into a new contract for the broadband side as you will be changing the product you are signed up to.

Thats not a pop at BE, with many companies it will be similar, also agree with others, with regards to just the phone side of things it will be much of a muchness, all have up sides and downsides. Performance wise it will pretty much be the same, cost wise can vary and so can contract lengths so those are the things to look at if determined to move line rental away from BT.

they just use BT WLR3. Moving back to BT or to another company remains no more difficult if you have taken BE Land Line.
