Best 2.4 Outdoor Wifi to send signal 300m away?

We're on a farm, and have a couple of the TP Link N300 devices pointing in various directions for wifi access elsewhere on the farm.

We need a third one, but the distance required for the signal to travel is 300 metres. It's direct line of sight, zero obstructions. Our current N300s seem to cope with 200m ok, but get a bit patchy around 300m away.

Anyone able to recommend what the best device to buy would be? Needs to be 2.4ghz.

(It's to get wifi to a new electric gate installation).

I've got a couple of the above working well.

Why would I need a pair? Will one not do the job?
These things work best in pair, I think they may even come preconfigured, but I don't see a reason why you couldn't do with just one if you already have a capable device at the other end..

But if you do this, then their distance guarantee will no longer apply, I would reckon.

I have no idea. It just needs to receive wifi doesnt it? There's no plugs & power at the other end for another unit.

I don't understand. With our current N300 devices they send wifi out 200m no problem. I can stand in the middle of a field and connect to it and download and upload via the network. It doesn't need a second device.

All I'm asking for is a device that can do this over 300m rather than 200m.

It doesn't need to be high speed or high quality at all. It's to link to the electric gate so we can remotely open/close it and update scheduling for events.

It's also doable via a gsm sim card but thought wifi would be better as no monthly sub needed.

Ahh, hold on, so the gate ITSELF has an integrated wifi chip and can use it for events?.. This was not clear.

Well, then yeah, you can try to just get one of these Mikrotiks, install it on your house, point it at the gate, see if it works.

Also, can you reach/replace the gate's wifi antenna, a directional one would help a lot and maybe even save you having to buy the Mikrotik.

how much data would it use over gsm a month?

negligible amounts. well under 1gb. found a deal for £4/mth which was the other option.
If EE coverage is good:

There's a £15 setup fee here with 750mb free a month for life

@cgfw201 Keep in mind that for a 2 way communication (download/upload) both sides need to reach the other side. You need to check the range of the WiFi access point and the device that is going to connect to it.

You can download and upload in the middle of a field because 1) the N300 can reach your device (phone, laptop, etc) and 2) your device is powerful enough to reach the N300. If the N300 can't pick the device's signal, it doesn't work.

This is not a problem if the gate can reach the WiFi access point which is 300 meters away, but if it can't - and assuming it also needs to send data back - you either have to upgrade it or do what was recommended above and have 2 WiFi devices.

Right now you're doing this:

Wireless access point (N300) <---> Phone; Tablet; Gate;

With 2 devices, you create a wireless bridge between the two access points and then the devices connect to the second wireless access point:

Wireless AP A <--- wireless bridge ---> Wireless AP B <---> Phone; Tablet; Gate;

The downside is that you need electricity to power the second device*, but it fixes the problem (and it can also be expanded with more wireless bridges to connect different buildings, etc).

(* I don't know how good they are from a network security point of view, but if you have a power socket the gate, maybe you could just use cheap powerline adapters? They use electric cables to transmit data (Wikipedia). Not very fast, but could be good enough for what you need. )

Just opened up the MicroTik SQX device recommended.

It's plugged into the power, and ethernet cable into my router. And there's no signs of life. No lights on the unit, no new wifi network created. Going to http://192.168.88.1/ as suggested in the manual is just a dead link.

Any tips?
