Best ADSL Modem Router/Gateway

Hi guys

I'm now on my 3rd ADSL Modem Router/Gateway device and every one I've used so far is rubbish in one way or another.

1st - Belkin N1 Wireless Modem Router (stable, but I found it slow and I broke one of the antennas)
2nd - Belkin N1 Vision Wireless Modem Router (crashes alot, and zero DDOS protection)
3rd - Linksys WAG160N Wireless Access Gateway (multiple problems- wireless can just stop for no apparent reasons, ethernet ports can just stop for no reason, frequest crashes, poor customer support from Linksys, assumed Linksys would be a good make as it was owned by Cisco... boy was I wrong)

Can anyone recommend a Wireless Modem Router/Gateway that meets the following specs?:

802.11 A,B,G + N Wireless Standards.
MIMO antennas.
ADSL2+ Modem Built In.
Built-In Firewall and DDOS Protection.
At least 1x 100mbps (preferably 1gbps) ethernet port.
Good customer support from the manufacturer.
Relatively frequent firmware updates.
Single Port and Port Range Forwarding.
UPnP and NAT (Open NAT, not strict or restrictive).

Hmmm I'm surprised you suffered a lot of crashes with the Linksys, though I'm unfamiliar with the Belkins outside of having looked at them as options a few times. There may be something else going on in your environment that's causing these problems since such things should never be a common occurrence.

It may be worth checking to see how your computers operating system and motherboard BIOS are interacting with the LAN connection (disregard the BIOS one if you use Wi-Fi and or its not built onto the motherboard). I usually disable all the 'wake-on-LAN' stuff in the bios to prevent unusual behaviour in non-corporate (home) environments.

Likewise the OS on your computer or the network adaptor you're using to connect into the router could be to blame, although that's not an easy one to pin down. Certainly the repetition of your problem over several devices suggests that it may not be the router(s) to blame for all those issues.

Sometimes poor ISPs can also cause routers to reset; Tiscali does it a lot with mine but on a non-Tiscali based provider it works fine – sometimes this can be fixed by tweaking a few settings like PPP type and Multiplexing etc. That brings up another question, just what do you mean by ‘crashing’? Do you mean that the router randomly reboots or..?

As part of the diagnostics for each unit I tried isolating it from all but one network device (Xbox 360 or iPhone, or WirelessLaptop, etc) and the units still crashed. In the case of number 2, the N1 Vision Modem Router, I tried unplugging everything from it and even disabled it's wireless, and it still crashed and become unresponsive to the control panel on the front.

I've checked the Linksys forums and I'm not alone in having problems with the WAG160N, so I don't think my PCs are at fault there. I suspect the Linksys problem is related to overheating because if I put the unit next to an open window, with the unit propped up on one side to keep the vent holes clear, then it seems to crash far less frequently. I have an RMA number for my Linksys after finally persuading their customer support people that the product was faulty. I'll flog the replacement when it arrives and try and buy something more reliable.

Lastly, by crashing I mean lock-ups. Where the router will just freeze and become unresponsible, forcing me to pull the power plug and reboot it.

I went for a DrayTek router my actual router is now discontinued line but i have had no problems at all. They are dearer than many but reliable.

I have Draytek Vigour 2800VG http://www.draytek.co.uk/

I've been using a Netgear DG384GT for the last 3.5 years or so and cannot complain... Last year I bought a Zyxel662H but after a few weeks I went back to my old and reliable DG384GT..... the Netgear's customer service sucks though

It's not got "N" spec, (unless there has been an update), and the ariels are not replaceable, but I have been using a Zoom X6 for two years without a problem and it only cost about £40.
